Taekwondo as most of us know has turned into a commercialising tool meant for profits. Almost everyone i meet in my country claims that they are black belts. At times it makes me wonder, how good am I, since being a black belt holder doesn't seem to be anymore meaningful. Previously before the wide practice of Taekwondo, wherever we go and if we say that we are a Taekwondo black belt holder, a level of respect will be given by the other party. Today, I wonder if the value of Black Belt is still there? I consulted my master thereafter pertainining to this matter. Through this blog, perhaps, i could share some matters into what had been taught to me as to increase the level of knowledge among Taekwondo practitioners especially those about to be promoted to the rank of black belt. Remember one thing, black belt is the end of a journey but also represents the start of another wonderful journey. That is to learn how to be confident, how to lead, how to do better in everything, how to overcome fear and most of all, alevate one's level of discipline. If one or even everyone that you know proclaims themselves to be black belt, always compare yourself with them. Improve on the areas where your competitors are better than you instead of underestimating yourself. Only then would you deserve to be called a black belt. It doesn;t matter how good are you in sparring, it doesn't matter what DAN are you in, It's the heart to fight, to push and the virtues within us that matters. All the best everyone. Cheers
While sparring has evolved from no more than just a friendly match to an olympic game, the perception towards sparring has changed. I am a member of my dojang and i was put in a state of agast when some members said, they dont even know how to defend themselves in the event that they are being harrassed. So, i proceeded further by asking why and the answers given were shameful, embarrassing and further more reflecting a wrong system in TKD(W.T.F). When approached, these individuals are centralising their attention more on scoring points in sparring rather than conditioning themselves for both sparring and self-defence. I must admit, as a Taekwondo practitioner, it happens to me as well but not to such a serious extend for i diversify my training into self-defence as well. Remember one thing, In sparring, its not about points, its about strength od both mental and physical. If a figther is equiped with both of this, does it matter if it is sparring or self-defence? We fight with everthing we've got.
