Well I finally have been getting back to my workouts!!! A couple months back I switched my weight lifting to accomedate Taekwondo a little more. Before I was lifting heavy weights at a max of 10 reps. Now I have lightened up the weights by about an average of 10-15 pounds and increased my repetitions to 15-20. Plus to keep up a mild muscle gain I add 5-10 pounds before each rep. At first it was really killin my energy, but I am finally getting used to it. I still run 3 days out of the week and practice my form and stretching(for all you new people stretching used to be a weakness of mine) For the first time stretching is actually refreshing. It used to hurt. I would feel like I was gonna hurl it hurt so bad. But now I actually look forward to stretching @5:30 in the morning. I have slowed down a little in my class participation because the last couple of tournaments have been a little depressing. Constantly I am told at tournaments not to kick hard in tournaments. I actually watched a buddy of mine amost get disqualified for kicking somebody to the head!!!! I always thought that a tournament was a time to show off all your hard work!!! We wear protection. We have head gear on. We have big old chest protectors. So what's the problem?? I have moved up the belts kinda slow. I want to be a real deal Black belt. But at the same being in my 30s I did feel like I was running out of time. I have been trying to find my own personal path in Taekwondo. Some people take TKD for mearly the "art form". Some people take TKD for the physical workout. Well I take TKD to try to be the best martial artist I can. I have set some new goals. I look forward to teaching TKD to students down the road. I look forward to having my own school down the road. I think my personal experiances of dealing with a weakness of stretching and personal training is gonna help me down the road. Anyway, I'm kinda proud of myself for working through my little energy proplem and get back to doing what I like to do. So that's it.... Chuung Hyo everybody!!!! IrishTKD

I dont know what it has been lately....But I have been TOTALLY struggling in my workouts lately!!! I was going to the gym 4 times a week in the morning around 6:30 am to run, then going back to the gym at lunch and lifting weights and then going to 2 classes on monday and wendsday and then a class on friday and usually sparring after class on monday and wednsday. Then I switched my lifting to in the morning so that I would have more time, and started running at lunch. But as of this week, I have only attended 2 classes and no morning workouts and no lunch workouts. I have kinda got the wind blown out of my sails latelty. I am trying to deal with the fact that I may be to old to do anything more with TKD than to become an instructor. Which would be good!!!! But I really want to fight professionally. I see that World Combat laegue fights standing up. Plus I think Hapkito would be a good answer to Ju-Jit-su for UFC. But I really dont want to fight for UFC. So anyway, I am trying to get past the little tantrum I am having and trying to come to grips with the fact that I may be too old to compete in any "professional" martail arts. I haven't given up yet, I may try kickboxing...but I am trying to get back to focusing on my training in TKD so I can work towards a black belt. Anyway, just had to get it off my chest that I think I might be at the start of "old guy" and that I really want to fight proffesionally or work as a stunt double or a bad guy in a martial art movie.....But it may be too late. Oh well....

Just thinking ahead and wanting to get a jump on the creative form that I have to come up with and perform before my black belt. Just send me a message telling me which song you like the best..... Thank you everybody... Chuung Hyo!!!! IrishTKD

Today's public schools have become very run down in the Atlanta area. I belive that a lot of "Downtown" schools have become run down, which has forced many parents to belive that the only way they can ensure their children get the proper academic teaching is either by home schooling or by enrolling their children into private schooling. The nice thing about private schooling is the fact that the school is not bogged down with as many federal and state regulaions as the public schools. They have the uniquie possibility to not only offer students the traditional "3 Rs" or reading, writing, and arithematic. But they can also offer classes such as "Russian", and other foriegn languauges other than the traditional spanish or french. I am presently starting to look into what it would take to get Taekwando taught in schools. The class would be a lot more than just a gym class. Students would have to contiually learn and practice the tenants of taekwondo as well as the physical parts of TKD as well. The one thing that would be different in this class though, would be the fact that students would wear the same belt the whole year. At the end of a "school year" is when they would be "belt tested" as if they were taking their final tests. Without getting into the whole explanation of my idea, which hasn't been fully developed yet, would partents be open to a class that was taught this way in their child's school? I know on this web-site I am going to probably get a positive response...but I figured I would ask on this site first because my idea is just that right now. I am still trying to come up with a workable class that would incorporate everything taught on the physical side, but also teach students about "the way of" principals taught in TKD as well. Pretty soon we will have a generation of children that have learned it is ok to talk back to their teachers and elders. Children who have had no tv regulations or internet usage regulations instilled in them. I fear that our country is rotting from the inside out and we need to change the way children are taught to behave before it is too late and we are crushed by our very principles that started this country. Freedom of speech has become a freedom to say whatever or whenever...even if it is rude or unappriopriate. All men are created equal has become a way of one getting their way instead of a treatment we should give to everybody. Plus it has become a way we treat criminals as if it is ok for them to behave badly but still DEMAND to be treated like the rest of us who follow rules and treat people with respect. Elders are looked as slower and stuck in thier ways instead of people that have more experiance at life then us younger. My question to parents out there is this.... Do you think having a class that focuses on this will be helpful in in our schools and would it make any kind of difference for the future of our children or this country?

It's no secret @ my school that I enjoy sparring the most in TKD. Most students make light of the fact that I am always willing to spar. Most of the time I will stay after 2 classes just so that I can spar against other students. It always fustrates me to see that students dont want to spar. In my opinion, sparring is the colmanation of everything you learn in class. Sparring helps to SPEED up your form. To get you to react in real time and be able to quickly measure up to your opponent and find his/her weaknesses. I see a lot of black belts at the tournaments I have attended that dont even score a point in a sparring match!!!! Plus I notice that students who choose NOT to attend sparring classes or dont participate in sparring at tournaments usually aren't that good of a martial artist. Any of you who disagree....come to my school and prove me wrong!!! (Doubt you will.) This is a MARTIAL ART, not Tai Chi or yoga. The whole point of TKD is "the way of the hand and the foot"!!!!! Meaning: a specific WAY to defend yourself with your hands and feet!!!! You SHOULD expect to spar. Dont get me wrong, I totally belive that forms and stretching are VERY important. Forms are going to help you kick, block, and punch correctly. But you will not fight someone "form" style. Plus I think it is soooo important to practice outside of class. And it is also important to stay in proper shape as a martial artist. Just like any other athelete in any other sport. I used to HATE running till I finally broke down and started running in order to train for our next tournament. I have noticed such a difference! It only took about 2wks before my stamina increased in our cardio sparring practice classes. I totally belive running helps. Anyway, just thought I would put that out there. I am SO looking forward to being a black belt, a REAL black belt! I see a lot of watered-down black belts at tournaments.....To all you water-belts, make sure you stay away from the tournamants I attend, cause I intend to expose you on film when I become a black belt!!! I work on my forms just as hard as sparring cause I know y'all WONT be sparring, so I intend to OWN you in forms and board breaking as well. Just remember...."Boards dont hit back." (Bruce Lee in enter the dragon)
And if you are a "only forms" water-belt, you are NOT A MARTIAL ARTISTS. Despite your Master telling you so. I know I am probably gonna get negitive responses to this, but I really feel that if you disagree, you are one of the WaterBelts bringing our sport down. COWBOY UP!!!!! Chuung Hyo!!! IrishTKD
