No we don't train in olympic style sparring. That style lacks defence,no hands, not good for self defence. We train for real combat not sport. My students do compete in tournaments and they know sport from real defence.I train my students for what would happen in the streets not just the ring.Too many schools focus too much on the sport and not the true Martial Art of self defence.
Sorry for the delayed reply-am in TC visiting my Mom (who, like many octogenarians does not have internet)
I teach Olympic sparring but not as the be-all, end-all activity that I see in some dojangs. It is separate and distinct from hoshinsul. I do think it teaches some valuable lessons about distance-control, timing, and hitting a moving target. I want my students to be well-versed in the entire art and given the choice between non-contact/point sparring vs full-contact/continuous Olympic sparring, we have chosen the latter. I hate when I see people sparring with their hands at their sides and teach my folks to kick them in the head. :)
