I am proud to be a member. The martial arts educational network now consists of more than 265

My trip to Spain
Posted On 04/16/2008 07:51:42

I just recently returned from a trip to southern Spain (Costa del Sol) We stayed at the Gran Melia Don Pepe in Marbella. We also visited Tangier, Morocco and Gibralter (British -owned so I was able to visit the UK sort of!)

Had a fantastic time.

8 hours on the plane and a 6 hour time difference !!!!

The weather was cool about 65-70 F ... and we did have some rain (although we were told it never rains in Spain only about one week out of the year.... I guess we picked the week!)

We visted several bullrings and cathedrals. We went to Ronda, Granada and Mijas. Enjoyed the shopping in Puerto Banos (the Rodeo Drive Bevery Hools area of Marbella)

We visted the one of the most important architectural wonders of the world "La Alhambra" in Granada

Enjoyed clubbing at La Notte nightclub where a beer cost about 22.00 US !!!

Morocco was indeed an experience and we rocked the Kasbah, rode camels and watched some snakes being charmed.

Ate Moroccon food, drank Casablanca beer & belly danced (all in that order!)

Saw the apes on Gibralter. The saying goes that Gibralter will remain British as long as the apes remain. They were brought over orig. from Morocco. At one point their numbers were dwindling and Winston Churchill brought more over. It shall remain British!

We visited St. Michaels Cave, had fish & chips and a Guiness at the Angry Friar. I tried to make one of the Royal guards on sentry laugh but he was way too stone faced!

Speeding ticket
Posted On 03/27/2008 20:55:31

Argh!!!!!!!! I was called early this morning by the local gym to teach a kickboxing class at 9:00. I am on call as a substitute kickboxing instructor. It pays very well and it is quite different to teach at a gym then at the Tae Kwon Do school. The regular teacher had a miscarriage the day prior so was not feeling well.

It was last minute so I tied my hair up, put on the sweats and grabbed my gloves and drove to the gym.

I drive past a police car on my right and then glanced in my rear view mirror to see flashing lights and was truly surprised that it was me he was pulling over. I was speeding???

"License, registration & insurance card please"....

"Yes Sir"

"You do realize you were going 42 in a 25 mile an hour road"

"I was? ... so sorry"

"Where may I ask are you off to?" - I can see him looking at my boxing gloves on the seat beside me.

"Well I am teaching a kickboxing class in about 10 minutes" ....

The police office puts his hands up and backs away from the car..... "Oh don't worry Ma'am you're not getting a ticket but just a warning. Please drive safely and slowly to your destination"

"Yes sir" ... Thank you!!"

WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Big Sigh of Relief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How smart is your right foot?
Posted On 03/18/2008 08:12:29

Just try this.  It is from an orthopedic surgeon...........

This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's preprogrammed in your brain!

 1. WITHOUT anyone watching you (they will think you are GOOFY......) and while sitting where you are at your desk in front  of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.

Your foot will change direction (If it doesn't you have a  neurological problem)!

I told you so!!! And there's nothing you can do about it!

You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so

Cardio Kickboxing
Posted On 03/10/2008 07:54:57

I teach the Cardio Kickboxing program at AITKD. I was certified by John Graden in his CardioKarate program back in 1999 but have since developed my own program which is a combination of this and circuit training (Turbulence Training) and weights. I will soon be offering Combat Strike which is a body bar strike & block workout.

I've also introduced resistance/Thera/Dyna bands to the class for resistance training and stretching

Prior to the class, students wrap both hands with cloth hand wraps to help protect the knuckles and support the wrists. Bag gloves (12-16 oz) with Velcro are used to punch the wavemasters
(freestanding heavy punch/kick bags).

A typical class begins with dynamic stretching drills to loosen up and also synchronize movement for the upper and lower body. A review of the four basic punches (jab, cross, hook, and uppercut) used in kickboxing. Movements are not choreographed but keep a steady 32 count to music, which adds to your stimulation and motivation. (I like it loud and pounding ... rock & techno)

A variety of combination punches are used and the same arrangement takes place with the front/side/round/back kick which are the four basic kicks used in these classes.

Finally, some weight training with dumbbells, and circuits - much like Turbulence Training -(push ups, crunches, planks, squats/lunges etc) finish off the workout and a conventional cool down period with arm/leg and lower back stretches ends the 60-minute class.

This type of workout provides strength-training benefits similar to lifting weights because of the "resistance" when punching or kicking the bag. It is also offered as an alternative to conventional
aerobics. Once a person takes about 5-8 classes, he or she will feel quite comfortable with the routine.

I've taken what I learned during my certification in CardioKarate and added my own kick to it so-to-speak

If you're going to be exercising anyway, why not have the added benefit of learning a little bit of martial arts.

I also do fitness assessments at least twice during the year. Body measurements are taken as well as range of flexibility. Target heart rate is measured and this number is compared to the pulse rate taken during class to note whether the student is exercising in their desired range. The amount of push ups & situps are recorded. We then refer back to the results after several months to see if there is any improvement.

I have on average 25 students from 14 yrs old to 67 years old.... both men & women

Winners

Winners

Winners take chances like everyone else,
They fear failing, but they refuse to let fear control them.

Winners don’t give up,
When life gets tough, they hang in until the going gets better

Winners are flexible.
They realise there is more than one way and they are willing to try others.

Winners know they are not perfect.
They respect their weaknesses while making the most of their strengths.

Winners fall, but they don’t stay down.
They stubbornly refuse to let a fall keep them from climbing.

Winners don’t blame fate for their failures,
Nor luck for their successes.

Winners accept responsibility for their lives.

Winners are positive thinkers who see good in all things.
From the ordinary, they make the extraordinary.

Winners believe in the path they have chosen even when it’s hard,
Even when others can’t see where they are going.

Winners are patient.
They know a goal is only as worthy as the effort that’s required to achieve it.

Winners are people like you.
They make this world a better place to be
