At least you had a chance to spar against a Master! That is always fun even if it can be an exercise in futility. The tournaments that I attend are also quite limited in the Executive division (over 35). I have sparred Blue belts in the 30's, 17 year old Wing Chun practitioners, and 40 year old Red Belts! The fun part is, my training partners are all Black Belts (2nd degree and up) whose ages run from 13 to 40. I actually enjoy the tournaments because I get to be spar and compete w/ people closer to my age and ability! I did get the chance at one tournament to spar against a member of the Columbian Olympic Team. Man was sorely outclassed. Still, I survived several attempts at headshots and was complimented on my defense.
Congratulations on your tournament and yes, my hips are something I work very hard at stretching! Thanks to KickChick's knowledge I started incorporating some yoga stretches (google Pidgeon Stretch) just to target the hip flexors. I make sure to really get in a good stretch before sparring and after. It really helps alot but even using this approach I have had "tight" hips after a good sparring session. I have my Sports Orthopedist keep a close eye on all my joints and connective tissue. At my age, it pays to be mindfull of joints.
How did the competition go? Did you and your son place?
I am the oldest student in our dojang as well. I am also 4 years older then the oldest instructor and 6 years older then my Master! I like to set an example for the other parents who are "too busy" to get involved. Even when I was working 2 jobs and sleeping 4 hours a day, hitting the gym, I still made time for TKD! Not too many of the parents ever discussed being "too busy" w/ me!
