What do I do to get ready for a fight?
If you mean immediately beforehand...
I don't do anything. I don't even think about the fight. I'll read a book, catch a brief nap, watch other competitors, grab a light bite to eat and drink plenty of water, relax and chat with friends or new friends... etc.
I figure it this way... if it's the 'big day'... whatever's going to happen, is going to happen, and there's nothing more I can do to change it. If I did my job getting ready for the big day... then everything will be fine... if I didn't do my job, then I'm gonna get my butt handed to me. So there's no use worrying about it one way or the other.
When its time to get ready to compete... I just gear up, warm up, and get ready to go to work.
I tend to go out there 'emotionlessly'. When it's time to get the job done, I shut the emotions off... I don't let emotions get into the game, because they'll screw you up every time. I may, between matches/rounds, chat it up a bit and share a chuckle or two, but that's about it. Otherwise, the emotion generator stays shut off.
I sincerely believe, whether it's a light contact sparring deal, or a boxing match, or an MMA fight.... you NEVER win your fight 'in the ring' because it can't be done. You ALWAYS win it in the gym/do-jang, if you win it at all. Training is where you build the stamina, speed, and strategy to win. The ring is where you execute that strategy. If you've trained well, and you get in there and 'do your job' (hit and don't get hit), you should be fine and the fight will take care of itself, as long as you KEEP doing your job and STAY ON TASK with a clear head and a patient mind.
