I am interested in learning the bo staff / quarterstaff. My early inspiration for this comes from the 1938 version of The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn. The first meeting with Little John is a classic movie moment. The fight itself it pure Hollywood, but for the kids the movie was designed for, it was as real as it could get without killing someone.

I currently have a bo staff that I will be using more as a walking stick than anything else. I prefer the feel of wood to the new collapsible walking sticks.

James, if you liked the bo staff in Robin Hood (I really enjoyed that movie!), check out Forbidden Kingdom!  Great movie with a good amount of bo staff.

So many people have this idea that a gun makes bad guys stop in their tracks simply by pointing it at them and that squeezing the trigger makes them fall down.  They seem to forget that like any other weapon, use of a gun requires training to make it effective.  Not only that, guns must be maintained and cared for.  One of the problems with guns in our country (I can't speak for other countries) is that people have lost the respect for them.  They buy them and treat them like a good luck charm and then wonder why it didn't save them when the time comes to use it.  Also, kids with guns treat them like toys.  Parents with guns in the house need to teach their kids proper gun etiquette and safety.

Very good points!  I often laugh about wanting to get a pink handgun because I am convinced that when I pull that out whoever is meaning me harm is going to be laughing so hard I will have plenty of time to get away!  However, I don't think people always respect the gun as a weapon and don't have the proper knowledge of being safe with a gun.  I work part time at Gander Mountain (hunting, camping, fishing retail store) and am amazed by some of the stories I hear about the lack of safety when it comes to firearms.  However, we do sell a pink handgun and rifle!!

Wow!

If you want to bring gun's into the equation (seems strange to me on a MA forum) then I would have to choose the gun as my favorite.  Then again, I am a certified Police Firearms instructor.  So.....

Yeah....

I am a bit biased...

I'm sure we probably do, but I can't promise that.  I don't work in the hunting or archery department.  I stick to customer service and license sales!

I figure that if you can make a martial art out of the bow (kyudo, kuk gung), then guns certainly qualify.  Of all the martial arts weapons, guns are the only one commonly used for martial purposes now, though with a bayonet attached, all those cool spear and bo moves can be utilized when you run out of bullets.

LOL Celtic.  Certainly a long gun would lend itself to those moves.  Wonder if we could come up w/ some sort of techinique for an empty pistol?

A hammer fist would actually work well; you'd be hammering the person with the butt of the pistol.  I'm sure that holding a heavy steel object would lend itself to blocks strikes with the barrel as well.  I don't know if this could adversly affect the pistol's performance in its intended use.
