Why do you break?
Why do you break? In this era where all of the focus is on competition and sport fighting, why is breaking still relevant?

A few of the reasons I break are to condition my body, to develop focus (especially power brick breaking, the ability to focus all of your energy into one strike and block out everything around you), practice techniques at maximum power, and to bulid confidence by overcoming or facing fears.

Let's hear your thoughts...

i guess it's like a tournament in a way.  you go to tournaments to see where you stand, to see who's better than you and you are better than whom.
breaking is the same way when it comes to determining where you stand.  and keeping that in mind, you probably should know how much force to use during sparring and in real life situation.  if you can break 10 concrete slabs with straight punch, you might not want to use full blown punch on a street fight, because that just might kill the guy.  on the other hand, if you can break 10 concrete slabs with straight punch, you could probably focus more on speed than power in a fight and still do good amount of damage with each strike.

I feel like Nathan.

Breaking is actually my favorite part of training.

As a woman, it gives me a supreme sense of confidence to break 5 boards or 2 concrete blocks (my 2 personal bests thus far).

It allows me to practice what can be deadly techniques in a constructive manner.

i agree with doughboy and kalynn.  i like to see how many i can break, and try to do better each time.   it's a good test of accuracy too.

it helps with my accuracy, strength, timing and confidence.. nothing like cutting through 4 inches of board like butter....( when done correctly )

I agree with Mike.  It helps build confidence, respect, and concentration when done correctly.  If you do it incorrectly, then you find out in a hurry.
