i prefer dumbbells for few reasons. first, it's easier to get. not many gyms have various weights of kettlebells. second, if you can't lift in the middle of exercise, it's easier to throw away dumbbells than kettlebells due to its shape. with dumbbells, you can just open your hands as you throw it away, but with kettlebells, you have to rotate your hands in a way so that the kettlebell will get tossed without catching your hand. and dumbbells are better balanced as well. also, with kettlebells, there are certain exercises you can't do, so you would have to switch to dumbbells to do those exercises anyway.

I am in agreement with Doughboy!! He is right on - Kettlebells are difficult to hold and manuver correctly so it is hard to have proper form. I would recommend not using them unless you have someone skilled in using them show you how. Many people try to use them too early in their exercise regime or use ones that are too heavy. Weight lifting mixed with other exercises to increase speed and endurance are my favorite combination for increasing proficiency as a martial artist. Too much muscle makes for moving too slow but being strong, especially for a female competitor, can really give you the edge!

Well Paval would disagree, so do I. Kettlebell training can explode your strength conditioning, provided you have someone who can show you proper usage of them. I put the same caveat for any type of lifting. Imporper training with weights can cause many injuries to the individual. These injuiries can come from the equipment or from improper form.
Where are you located? You profile states Iceland. I don't know anyone personally from that area, heck I have only landed there on flights in route to Germany and points beyond. But I think I can find a good trainer nearby for you if I put my mind to it.

Have to side w/ mprowe on this one. Kettlebells are tried and true. Many lifters are now bringing back the "old school" training to include them. As others have stated, make sure you find someone that can properly instruct you and correct your form. Being in Iceland, home of some pretty big powerlifters, you should not have too much problem finding someone that is comfortable w/ kettlebells.
