It's better to drink water before, during, and after the workout. That keeps you properly hydrated.

I cut way back on dairy products years ago during vocal training. I find that the beneifits of a cutback on dairy products extents to martial arts as well. I have milk with cereal and cream with coffee and the occasional glass of milk. 2%, by the by. I like pizza once in a while. Beyond that, I don't chug milk or eat mozzeralla sticks.
Dairy products promote the build up of mucus and tend to make one paunchy. Not a good combination. I drink a lot of water, Gatorade, Powerade, and Propel, particularly after class to replenish electrolytes and to hydrate.
Milk does have a water content and helps with calcium, so it is good to have some on a regular basis. But I try not to have too much.

I drink 2l of water during the day and then after I come back from class I drink cold milk with a banana and a small scoop of choc protien powder all blended together I find it helps my muscles ache less the next morning, which is ALWAYS a good thing I tried lots of different things, grapefruit juice, sport water, even those yukky green veggie drinks (which are supposed to clear out the chemicals that make you ache), but the protien and banana shake is my fave and works for me

Nice job DB! I agree 100%! Since my lifestyle gets a bit hectic, I still have a shake in the morning (skim milk, oats, berries, and whey) and maybe, one right after a workout. For all the college kids or people that are "on the go" all the time. Shakes "supplement" a normal diet.

I agree. I find myself leaving my house at 5:30 every morning and returning sometime after 10 everynight so the shakes do end up supplementing a normal diet. I try to always have fresh fruits and vegetables available because I am so bad about taking the time out to eat a normal meal. I figure as long as I am eating healthy foods througout the day I can get by without eating normal meals. I would also much prefer to eat an orange or a mango than go through a fast food place.

i still have protein shake early in the morning since i go to the gym at 7am. for that use, i just picked up a cheap one with a lot of carbs and a lot of calories per serving. it has 33g protein, 43g carb, and 290 calories per serving, and that helps a lot during morning training. i find those protein shakes with a lot of protein with little carb tend to make me little gasy and it interupts with breathing and gets little uncomfortable while lifting heavy. at night though, after dinner, i eat half of tofu out of a package with little soy sauce instead of protein. i also carry bit of roasted grains with brown rice and beans so i just munch on those between meals at school. and i eat little bit of meat for dinner. so far, i think getting most protein out of beans worked the best for me.
