we don't train in weapons as class, but we do work on it every once in a while.  my favorite is "beating stick", usually a broom stick.  let's face it.  if you get in a fight on the street, it will be really hard to find a katana or nunchuk laying around for you to pick up and defend yourself.

I love weapons. I actually learned Escrima seperatly out of TKD from my Grandfather who passed away. I even learned it a bit before starting TKD. Since, learning it my Master has allowed me to teach it.

My Grandmaster of TKD is also well versed in Korean Sword, Staff, Nun-Chuck and Cane (for self defense). Which he has passed on to me.

Mainly in TKD there is no weapons to be learned... If we want it traditionally Korean then we should learn the broad sword and spear...

Our dojang in Gaithersburg offers kumdo for those who desire a weapon art.  In Frederick, we offer kumdo and hapkido, which has some weapon forms at higher belt levels (sword, cane, and I'm not sure of what else, having just formally started hapkido myself).

As for what I train in weapon wise, I train in kumdo and am the assistant kumdo instructor at our Gaithersburg location.

We do train in various weapons like nunchuks, long, medium and short staff, sword, chain, cane, three sectional staff, ect. Training for this is not to use in the streets, but the attain reflexes and a better eye and hand coordination. The best for self defense would be a news paper, an umbrella, keys, or a pen. But to avoid confrontation is the best self-defense.

I think they should start though shouldnt they, i want to learn how to use the sword or axe even though it isnt a traditional weapon, sometimes people bring swords and nun chucks in. But their is no training on them from our master they just practice with them.

I'm going to ask our instructor on this one now as I'm curious as to why we don't see weapons used within the TAGB
Think I may leave it until after the grading next week though, things are kind of stressy in class at the mo!

My master teaches several.

The most common is staff. That is our 'beginner' weapon. After I got the ball rolling again, a lot of students do katana which my instructor learned in Japan, along with kamas and flying kamas.

The less popular weapons are sai, and some of the chinese weapons that he knows.

I personally do nunchaku, katana, and very basic arnis (escrima sticks). Some of the basic stick defenses we use at the club where dough and I teach come from arnis and just general stick defense.
