Well, from a parents' perspective, they're always going to look at it as a bill that they have to pay, where a younger person would view it as them not supporting they're "passion". The other thing is, sadly enough, parents want their children to focus more on school work and what they see as more important, cause it's kinda hard to way "future options" in life if you're comparing martial arts to education.

What will take you farther in life, a black belt or a college degree. I wish I could side with you and saying your parents are wrong for holding you back from class, but as long as they're footing the bill, they'll kinda win that arguement. It sucks, but it's life.

Well I posted a thread here in this forum about coaching your child to Black Belt andit says:

" Don’t: Threaten to take away Martial Arts when they misbehave at home. This is a recipe for disaster. Martial Arts is where they learn to behave better and always encourage students to try their best. "

It is true that most of the public continues to view Taekwondo as a bonus, an activity that is no different than going to the mall or the movies, or skating rink.

It is up to the professional instructors to educate the public on the benefits of martial art training as a supplement to their formal education in schools. Martial arts is well known for developing confidence, strength, flexiblity, coordination, social skills, and positive goal setting ability.

Lets work as professionals to show the importance of this training to todays youth. There are others ways to set punishments rather than taking away a benefiicial tool for parents and community. (No TV/Videos/Cell Phone etc...)

It is difficult enough to keep the youth of today interested in a system based on discipline.

HOW ABOUT TAKE THEM TO CLASS AND..........LET THE INSTRUCTOR KNOW THEY WOULD'NT CLEAN THEIR ROOM :)

yeah, we tend to do that too.  we tell parents to let us know if the kids are misbehaving at home and we fix it in class

I think your parents want the best for you and thinking of you and your future.   I don't think that they are trying to hold you back, its the opposit.  They want you to secure your future and getting you to focus on your schooling or keeping your room clean.  They know how you feel about TKD, its a way for them to leverage that.  If you did what they expected of you, then I'm sure they wouldn't take TKD away from you.  Bottom line, if they wanted to pull you out of TKD, they don't need a reason, they would just do it.  Try to see it from their perspective, I know it might be difficult at times but I'm pretty sure that they have your best interest at heart.

Actually there is a huge body of research evidence coming out that shows that learning any (martial) art will make learning "easier". The actual research shows that having children do anything that requires focus and attention will develop those abilities. But it only works if the children actually are focused and give their attention to what they are doing. This happens in art since children are intersted in producing things and playing around. I have to believe the same is true of martial arts. When they get to the classroom in school, they are able to absorb the material much better and can focus much better. Hence learning becomes easier and more natural. In other words, learning to concentrate is a transferable skill. There's actually a lot more to it than just that. fMRI scans reveal that children who do art actually have the same brain structure as adults whereas children of the same age not doing art have do not have a brain that looks like an adult's yet.

For those interested, the full three year report that just came out is at the Dana Foundation website: www.dana.org

I like the idea of mentioning to the instructor that your son wouldn't clean his room. :)

It reminds me of another situation I used to have with my son... He would always have homework to do on TKD nights and so wouldn't go to class that night. After a couple weeks I caught on that he only had homework on TKD nights. At one of the weekend classes I asked the instructor in front of my son "would you mind if he brings his homework to class, that way he can join in the class as soon as he's done?" The instructor was all for it. After that my son started finishing his work in school again.

according to behavior modification psychology, both positive and negative reinforcements work very well, even with animals that don't understand the rules (i.e., finish your homework and go to tkd or don't finish homework and don't go to tkd).  and if you really like tkd and really don't like not being able to go to tkd, what your parents are doing should be very effective.
