EASY HERE DB!  Back flips off the side of the pool are very risky for head injury if the "flipper" is too close to the side of the pool.  Take it from someone who was a diver and hit the board with my arms two times in a row!

Try doing B/F's at a local tumbling/gymnastics place.  Many of them have foam bits where you can practice all sorts of flips and landings.  Some indoor skate parks have them as well...

Hey! Ya I'm trying to do the same thing...its really hard and i freak out everytime too...It's really important to have a strong core for stuff like this, so you will have the enrgy to pull yourself throught it quickly when you're in the air. :P That's what I've been told so i hope this helps...tell me how you do!!! :P

I have to agree with narcsage on the comment about trying it in a foam pit...they are amazing! I actually joined my universities gymnastics club team. see if there is a local club team that you can join. Maybe at a YMCA or rec center near you.

One tip that I can give you is just go for it. I had the same fear. Then I just jumped real high and reached for the stars, tucked up into a tight ball and grabbed my knees. Before I knew it I was on my feet.

Try with spotters first though. once you get it by yourself...it will be much easier...trust me. Just keep persevering and don't give up! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I was doing breakfalls, and back rolls yester on some foam. I would say just have someone coach you as well because my master was able to point out when I was falling back on my natural tendencies to roll in a certain way.

Back flips on a hill so easy to do to get your confidence up and just change the gradient of the hill start steep and work your way flatter.

Have somone spot you until you're confident enough to try it on your own. Does your school have a crash pad (thick foam pads)? If they don't and backflips are something that's required, or you have a creative forms team, they may want to invest in one.
