Some helpful hints on how you can coach your child through to Black Belt Excellence. Do: Tell your child how proud you are of them (any time is a great time), especially before and after class. No one ever gets tired of hearing sincere compliments.
Don’t: Criticise your child during or immediately after class. Use the Praise/Correct/Praise principal. “Honey, you had such strong punches, I would like you to look at your teacher when you are in class, you had the loudest Kia’s of all the kids in the class!”
Don’t: Be a drop off parent. We miss you when you are not here and so does your child! It’s a known fact that kids who drop out of Martial Arts typically have parents who don’t take time to get involved.
Don’t: Complain about traffic, your busy schedule or money in front of the child as they can begin to feel guilty. Before you know it your child will tell you they want to quit.
Do: Take advantage of the teams and specialty classes that are offered for parents, involvement leads to commitment.
Don’t: Threaten to take away Martial Arts when they misbehave at home. This is a recipe for disaster. Martial Arts is where they learn to behave better and always encourage students to try their best.
Do: Lead by example, eat healthy, drink water and have a positive attitude. Deal with stress and challenges the same way you would like your child to.
Do: Give your child the thing he/she wants more than anything in the world, your time! Get involved and make earning a Black Belt a team effort!

that is great advice!!!
especially the drop off parent part!!!!
parents who don't do class w/kids just don't get it!!!!
there parents are not at the dojang when they are in class and don't read the monthly newsletter if your not inforcing what they have learned in the dojang at home than your wasting time and money!!!! and when your not watching class or reading the newsletter than you as parent are not going to know what needs to be done, worked on or etiquette and dojang rules!!!!

Do: emphasize that the Instructor has the final word on correct technique.
I learned from a different school. my son and I workout together and as a black belt I would see things that my son was doing wrong and some things that were just different. I didn't want to put him in an awkward position of having to choose who to listen to.

I totally agree with everything you have said.
It is all about promoting positivity-start to be negative in anyway and they want to quit, they will start to feel like they will never get it right.
You only have to look at their faces when you compliment them to know that what you have said has made them happy-we need to remember that what ever we say to them has an effect.

Oh, and as for drop off parents-there are a number of mums that drop off their children, then go downstairs sit, around a table and drink copious amounts of coffee and chat until the session is over!!
They don't watch their children, they just aren't involved at all, and I have to say, it drives me nuts because these are the same parents who question the instructor when their children haven't been put through for their grading-maybe, just maybe they had taken an interest or at least been present during class, their children would try a little harder and be invited to grade!

All good advice! I've been involved in every martial arts class that both of my kids have been a part of. It does make a huge difference!
