So, does your school teach rolls (sholder rolls, back rolls {no dinner rolls don't count}, falls (face, back) or throws(tosses)?  I was curious, I figure there is a lot of teaching of falling but rolls and throws might be a little different.  I've notice that last few times I've helped with Self-Defense that my natural reaction is not so natural to others.  I've trained that I'll only do some responses with certain people that know mymoves but how do you train someone take a throw or roll properly.

The biggest threat of injury that I know if is to the neck, most people don't land properly when being taken.  I know that must have been trained at one point or another but how do teach someone who hasn't been trained like me to follow a roll or toss so they don't get hurt?

No one has gotten hurt but it's a fear of mine, I'm not going out and doing a chest to back suplex on them but doing a headlock roll, it does get me nervious when we are doing it as a class.

Hey Baby_Huey,  We have a Judo and Hapkido as part of our curriculum at our school for self-defense purposes.  We teach white to green belts how to roll and fall.  And we add the throws and sweeps after green belt.

The new students start out with the break fall position with knee up and the other leg around that leg. "river around the mountain".  And then side slap next to the body.  They also learn the back break fall and the front break fall.  The rolls start out low and then works into a standing position.

It helps people of all ages to know how to fall properly. :)

Nope, the only time we go to ground is for exercises.  It is all about the stand up fight in our training.

we use judo/wrestling room at the university, so we have fully padded floor.  and i take advantage of that and teach roles and how to break a fall.

we also teach basics of judo and jiujutsu, in case fight goes to ground - however, we don't encourage staying on the ground.  we teach how to get back up on the feet efficiently.

Yes Sir all of the above (including the dinner rolls). We start rolls at age 3, falls at age 7, but the throws don't start until age 16 (except for anyone who has earned at least 1st Dan before that age) and anyone under 18 has to have special parental permission and waiver signed before they can start training with throws.

I am taught Rolls, and Falls.  Can get the rolls pretty well, its the falls where i have the problem. Mostly when I do fall, I don't slap the ground before my back hits when falling backwards or place them in a way that if it was during anything more than training would break my wrists.  All I hear when practicing falls is, 'Now you break your wrists'

As for throws, not so much.  We practice Joint locks, and there are some Leg Sweeps, trips involved in them, but nothing more than that, no Judo like Hip Tosses.

That's intresting with the throws. I've known throws since I was 12 but wrestling is different.

Sadly, our school does not teach any of those things.  Though I have been taught falls, rolls, locks, sweeps, and throws through my other styles (and my S.D. classes in Law Enforcement), our school is geared more toward WTF sparring.  It's sad really.

When I was an assistant instructor, I always had the kids do rolls.  At least once a week I would have a class where I would help teach them forward and backward rolls.  Even kids that had been there for 3 years or more had never been taught how to roll!  I was astonished!  Though I intend to complete my Black Belt at this school, I have already started looking for another school/style that deals more w/ locks and throws.  Since I was always the undersized student, I have been drawn to techniques which did not require power or brute strength.

Yep rolls and breaks are taught, I think they're an important aspect of SD. Also use the hip throws from Judo such as o goshi as part of SD. Nevewr hurts to borrow from another art.
