How often do you suggest for weight training? I'm going to start using the weight room at our park and rec center since it is very cheap, like 3.00 per visit or 20.00 a month. So resistance band exercises won't build muscle?

Basic routine 3 times a week and no, resistance bands will only help so much in firming your muscles but won't really "add" muscle.  To add muscle, you have to lift weights and add more weight once you can do 3 sets of 10 repititions at any given weight.

Are there any good tasting protein powders or drinks out there? Or is there a replacement that I can use? I'll look into adding the weight training. Hopefully next week I'll start.

I agree and disagree.

There are two ways that you can build muscle without weights are by exercising using your body weight and also by exercising with resistance bands.

Your body weight can provide a lot of resistance when you exercise. When you do pushups your arms and chests are pushing a lot of weight. When you do pullups you are using your entire body as resistance.

Really you can do almost any exercise with resistance bands that you could do with dumbbells but for an effective workout I suggst combining the two.

Now what I do in order to keep my sweet tooth ... is alot of cardio training in conjunction with my weight training AND diet (by "diet" I mine what I eat duing the day) and thank heaven for almonds! They get me through the day as well as PROTEIN!!  Fills you up ... and I love those shakes as well - you will notice less cravings. (you can purchase a big tub of whey protein at Walmart and add one scoop with 5 ice cubes, a banana, berries and a splash of OJ/milk and ENJOY) Great before and after workouts!

It might be worth it for you to see a nutritionist who will develop a plan for you to follow.  Or there is Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig ... which are very good programs if you are not able to formulate your own plan.  Remember this is NOT a diet but a change in your eating habits that you must follow for the rest of your life if you are truly serious in achieving your goals.

With protein powders, Walmart has them on sale this week for a 3 lbs tube is $14-15 which is cheap.  narcsarge and I do some different things with out proteins, he has a website trueprotein.com that helps with creating a special blend of what you need, but you do have to know a lot about mixes.  GNC has a good selection and the staff is good at helping you out but they can push certain products that you may not want and it gets pricey. I use Max Protien and I've also use EAS Whey Protein (walmart) for my protein bars and stuff.

I would do what KC recommended with talking with a nutritionaist, I did before I started any program (MDs are good as well, I just happened to graduate with friends who are nutrionalist and willing to help out for free). I do caution about Nutrisystem and Jenny Craig, You spend  alot of money on special food, generally lower sodium stuff, and you have to be very strick on the program and can't variey, my future mother-in-law was on Nutrisystem and she couldn't stand the program and now has almost $500 of food sitting at home that she can't stand to eat.

Thanks for the tips. I was going to go this morning to the rec center and do some weight training, but woke up with a horrible sore throat. Crap. I very likely won't use Weight watchers or nutrisystem. I have 20-30lbs to lose. I know that when I am more ative the weight will come off. Still having post surgical pain off and on so I move based on that. I'll look into the protein powders also. Actually my mom has some protein powder from Juice Plus she isn't using maybe I'll see if she'll let me have it.

Ok I have another question. I've been doing the weight training 3 times a week now. I was wondering if its ok to do pushups on days that are considered rest days. Thanks in Advance.

Perfectly fine to do pushups on off days but I wouldn't do it the day after your chest workout.  Remember, you grow when you sleep/rest.  So, do your chest workout and take the next day off from any sort of chest workout.
