Fruits for the natural sugar and proteins, nuts, protein shakes, nutritional bars that have added protein.

  • Whole grain bagel with cheese
  • Cereal with fruit and yogurt
  • Whole-grain toast with peanut butter and fruit
  • Hard-boiled egg sliced into a whole-wheat pita
  • Scrambled eggs, toast, and fruit
  • Oatmeal with raisins

A quick google search on energy foods will give you a lot more option.  I'm trying to keep my protein intake at between 80 and 120 while still keeping the calories and fat low.  I've noticed a definate increase in umph.

Good Post Old_Guy

Remember that carbs are important for energy.

Knowing the right carbs to eat though is very beneficial because eating the wrong carbs can rob your body of energy and even cause weight gain. Wrong being simple carb foods such as candy bars, cakes, pudding etc (basically anything processed and high in sugar = "bad" simple carbs

Complex carbs are broken down into glucose more slowly than simple  carbohydrates and thus provide a gradual steady stream of energy throughout the day. Those sugessted by Old_Guy

Also B-vitamins are one of the most important vitamins for giving you the energy you need to work all day. B complex helps metabolize these carbohydrates, the body and mind’s main source of fuel.

Also try eating more often during the day (mini snacks)  to fire up your metabolism more.... protein bars, raw nuts like almonds, an apple....  etc.

There are some homemade protein bars reciepes on the forum...also consider taking vitamins, I've notice a difference of when I take mine verus when I go off them.  I try to balance my diet and also I take suppliments to help (it does get pricey).  I like Bioenergy's Krush, it has some BCAAs.  I would throw a word of caution out with it...check the labels of everything if you go the vits and sups. route and make sure that everything is cleared for sports.  Companies won't sell you anything that is illegal by law but they might sell you something that is illegal in your leagues and other sports.

Great thread!  Love the suggestions you made Old Guy and now I'm hungry and wanting scrambled eggs on toast lol.

I would like to know what the best thing then is to eat for brekkie on a day when I'm going to be training in the morning.  This is usually a Friday (my day off work) or Saturday.  I find that, when I train in the evenings (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays), I'm OK but when I train in the mornings I sometimes get dizzy and black spots in front of the eyes.  I put it down to age, then I had a Type 2 diabetes test done to make sure - all OK.  Now, I'm wondering whether I should change my breakfast habits on these days.  Any advice?

What do you eat for breakfast now?  Do you have a solid balance of the food groups?  During the summer I play golf early in the morning and I hate to eat something so early (tee time at 6 a.m.)  I have a pre-workout shake I take in the morning as well if I know it's going to be a hot day.  Also during your workouts and after, you may want to find something that will help you get through, there are tons of supplements but I also hear alot chocolate milk has all the basics, I've never really tried it that much because I'm not a big fun of chocolate milk but that is by choice.  Also if you get dizzy drink more water through out the whole day and if it gets really bad try some Pedia-lyte, it does work for adults too.

Then my friend, I would read up more on it but from what I've been told and have read online is that you should consume about 8 oz. agenerally about a half an hour before and after.

Yeah I did a little reading up and will very likely only use ut after on days that I weight train (Mon,Wed,Fri) since there are a good amount of calories in it. Maybe thats why I've been tired in the afternoon most days. I was just drinking tons of water after a workout which on weight training is 30 min on the weights and 30 min of cardio. Guess I'll give it a try next week and see if it works.

I guess I'm not eating that well for brekkie.  Usually 2 slices of white toast and raspberry jam.  Maybe scrambled eggs on multigrain bread would be better.  I drink heaps of water during the day, especially on training days and I always take water with me and we often get a couple of 'drink breaks' during training.  What other supplements are there?  I may try the chocolate milk thing - not sure about that one.  What's Pedia-lyte?  What is in the shake you take with you?
