How effective are stretching devices? I'm using one for splits.

Depends on who you ask. personally, I am not a big fan of streteching devices or partner stretches - I think there is a high risk of hurting yourself. Here is a great book on Stretching, safe and effective: http://tinyurl.com/3dqnqc

I have a stretching device to help with the splits. You have to listen to your body and not overdue it. Otherwise, I thing the device is helpful.

I don't think it matters if you have the machiene...some peolple just naturally won't be flexible. Some people will never be able to reach the splits or kick head high. I just say save the money and use it for something better. Let me know how the machiene works for you =)

I have a versaflex in my room and I love it. I cn monitor my progress by seeing the degrees increase. I was so excited to have reached 170 and one da I will get 180. My knees do hurt if I start the splits standing up so this is a compromise.

PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscuar facilitation) partner stretches are very effective. You can even do them solo. It has to do with tensing the muscle for a few seconds before the stretch. It is scientifically sound. Look it ip.

i don't know about becoming flexible using the machine, but once you can do fairly good streches on your own, having a partner or the machine helps. especially on one of those days when you feel really tight. i can almost near 180degree split when i'm nicely loose, but there are days when i can't even go beyond 120degrees. those days, i just have to suck it up and have someone push my legs apart.

I think it's also dependant on when you stretch... I've always been taught.. light stretching before, heavy stretching after, when the muscles are warm... also keep well hydrated. One other thing look at "active flexibility" vs. "static flexibility". I can't do the Chinese splits, never have, my pelvis isn't built for it. But I can throw head level round kicks with power, and my axe kicks are vertical. So this is someting to consider. I've never used a machine, everyone I've scene looks a little to much like a medieval torture rack :)

One problem with these types of stretching machines is that there is a common tendency to use them to "force" a split (which can often result in injury) and/or to hold the "split" position for far longer periods of time than is advisable. Holding a v stretch for far too long specifically on a stretching machine which will in fact make it feel like utter torture and that is not what your goal in stretching should be. There is alot of disagreement about is how long you should hold a passive stretch such as the seated v-stretch. Some say it should be held for as little as 10 seconds to as long as a full minute (or even several minutes). Some researchers say 30-60 seconds... the more recent research on stetching the hamstrings indicates that 15 seconds may be sufficient enough time but even that may not be sufficient time for your other muscle groups. It's important not to try to increase your flexibility too quickly by forcing the stretch. Stretch no further than the muscles will go without pain!! I see nothing wrong with ocassional use to measure one's degree of flexibility. I used to use one after class when I was thouroughly warmed and stretched to measure how many degrees I was able to go.

Tae Kwon Do is practiced by 70 million people in 180 different countries. If everyone who studied Tae Kwon Do joined hands, they could form a line that would stretch around the globe 1.25 times!
