I posted this over on Martialart forum, but I thought I'd share it here as well. At most taekwondo classes that I attend where there are girls or women in the class, with two specific exceptions, the women train harder than most of the guys and can often beat the guys in the WTF style sparring. I'm pretty good at sparring, but I often want for decent opponents. My son is excellent and makes me work hard; he's as tall as I am, so I have no height advantage. But often, the ladies, who are generally a foot or more shorter than me, don't give up points easily either.
On the other hand, seven out of ten times that I spar with the gents, I find myself feeling like pro football player slumming with high school kids. With the ladies, unless they're rank beginners, I don't find that. And for the record, I do not consider myself to be an exceptional athlete or particularly tough.
On average, the ladies try harder and make the guys work harder. That has been my experience, at least. I am curious as to whether or not others find this to be true.
In any case, chalk one up for the gals.
Daniel

I would agree with you my friend. I've found that females are more aggressive in (ITF) sparring, I don't know if there is any reason or not but they do usually throw the first strike(they are so fast). They also seem to be able to get that one strike in an area that you didn't realize was uncovered. We have a lot of families at my school and it seems like the mothers push their children harder then the fathers at least publicly. It's not bad just telling the kids to pratice the forms and such. My favorite funny moment going against a female sparring partner was that she was a former professor of mine and I was just learning and it was hard for me to throw a strike because one she is femaie and two a person I repsect. She yelled at me "Stop being a man and hit me" I've since got over my fear of sparring with her but that does make me laugh.

Whether a girl is aggressive kind of depends on the personality too. Plus another reason why they might do better in sparring is that most of them know they can't exactly outmuscle us guys. So they have a tendency to use they're heads more to make up for it.
Yup, girls can be very aggressive and it's good for them to be that way since there are a lot of whackos out there that might attack them on the street. At the same time, it is our responsibility as male martial artists to treat them like any other classmate by sparring at our best and not be afraid of hurting them because in self-defence, they still have to learn the same lessons we do if they make a fatal mistake.
I know, my friend likes to call this "White Knight" syndrome. As men, we're not exactly inclined to hit a girl especially when some them can be the most beautiful looking girls we've ever sparred with! lol

In self-defense, I hardly ever go against a female unless they are showing how effective the move is against bigger guys. But you do have vaild point. I think I've heard it being called something smilar to "White Knight" syndrome. But I now don't worry about it. My thought process is that gender doesn't matter, if you step into the ring, you know what you are doing or at least know what can happen.

In Okinawa Sharon Suan was one of the instructors and at about 115 lbs she was the fastest and most aggressive fighter I have ever seen. She was responsible for more tournament knockouts than anyone on the island regardless of the art they were studying. There are some pictures of her on my website just cutting people in half. She was so intense and aggressive on the floor that even though she was teaching a gym full of GIs she had us all scared to death.
God I miss that class : (

Was that hands up and chin down, or the other way around?

It is my knowledge that women are better because of their physical attributes. Women have ability to be more flexible and therefore can kick higher, farther, etc. It doesn't surprise me that they would challenge a man. I think we like to compete and don't have the same thoughts as guy's do - as far as getting turned on...LOL

Might it also be because ladies practice taekwon_Do for different reasons than most guys as for example self defence rather than martial art for martial art sake?
I may be wrong but I think thats what it is.

I just got my butt handed to me by a little girl in class during sparring. It was funny, she barely came up to my stomach and she attacked like there was not tomorrow with little fist of furry, I couldn't get any offense and she chased me out of the ring. She said she was a "Jaguar". I was honestly the first time I've been chased around and out of ring, I was laughing after it was over. But she did really good just staying close and putting me on the defensive side.
