Im reading this book written by Bruce Lee himself(You have no idea how much it cost) and Im finding a lot of problems in his fighting style.  I understand that even for Bruce Lee(voted best martial artist known and best fitness icon ever since he died) there are problems.  But not this many.  I mean in every page I find atleat 5 problems(437pages).  It might be me but im sure that if I were to explain myself more people would agree.  Yet i feel bad because Bruce Lee is my idol and the reason I strarted Martial Arts.  It feels wrong to crtitize these things.  Im confused.

What book are you reading?  If you look at anystyle, you'll find holes in it.  I don't think there is any art that is perfect. The martial arts world was and still is changing.  Something that was written in the 60s may not have the same meaning as it does today.  Even Bruce Lee said that as a fighter you need to evolve.  My advice is to look at the good points you see in JKD and adopt what works best for you and leave the rest behind.

what kinda problems in his fighting style are you referring to?  every style has its flaws, especially styles with such short history.

or it could be the fact that you are still young and lack some experience.  i used to think i know a lot about fighting, but as i got older, i learned more and the more i learned, i realized i didn't know much back when i thought i knew a lot.

Perhaps you are referring to Lee's Tao of JKD?

Excellent book and one that every martial artist should read and have in their library (and it isn't that expensive really)

Lee's views on traditional martial arts are controversial but I do believe that anyone who has studied martial arts seriously can appreciate the philosophical tone of this book (if in fact this is the one you are referring to)

I think that your issue is this ...too many of us get too into dictated technique and form as well as tradition to appreciate Lee's theories.

As others have stated, it would help us to know what book you are refering to. Also, understand that Bruce thought all styles of Martial Arts were flawed in some way. His Jeet Kun Do is a process and not a style. So if you see flaws in his "style" then you see flaws in only what Bruce chose to do. I am sure there are flaws in my style and technique.  I have no doubt about that.  But I do what I think works for me.  Also remember, Bruce was constantly adding and deleting things he would do.  Hence he was always learning and growing....

I love "google fu" but I haven't found the book either. It was what latinorockiee sent me in a message.

Bruce Lee never wrote a Principles of Jeet Kune Do, so I'm not sure what it is you're reading.  There's a Tao of Jeet Kune Do, which is nowhere near 437 pages.  There's a Bruce Lee Library compendium series, but none of them are named Principles either.  Maybe you're finding mistakes because you're reading a book that's not really by Bruce Lee?

Having said that, get comfortable with criticizing your idols.  Bruce Lee was a tremendously gifted natural athlete who trained like a maniac.  His natural athleticism, good looks, and ability to self promote took him very far in life.  He was a notable philosopher in a field (martial arts) in which there are too many people who regurgitate the "philosophy" of their teachers without understanding.  But he was certainly not the "best martial artist", however you want to define a term that nebulous.  He was a known plagarist, and it's probable that he lied as part of his self promotion.

The faster you learn to question your idols, your teachers, your styles, and even your styles' founders (and I don't mean questioning just to be a jerk, I mean questioning for understanding, and criticism only when warranted), the faster you'll approach an understanding of martial arts that comes from your own development instead of one that's handed down to you prepackaged.

Thank you Baby_Huey and KylejustKyle.  I like to think of myself as one who looks to support things I read.  I just could not find anything that Latin mentioned but that does not mean that the book does not exist.
