No, I don't want to open a debate regarding titles.  I'm more interested in this:  What title are you addressed by in your dojang?  Is it one that is associated with your dan rank?  Your position as an instructor?

No debate; just for fun.

Mr. Jensen, or sir.

Outside of class, they call me by my 1st name.

My official rank is kyosahnim.  But nobody calls me that.  I'm Mister Daniel to the students.  And that's fine with me.

lol i'm not a black belt yet, but for the black belts we just call them sir or maam in class. those who are closer to the black belts in terms of personal relationship, [because they're in the demo team and hang out with them more often] call them by name. black belts call fellow black belts by name, but call the head coach or other older black belts sir/maam.

We call EVERYONE the same or above our rank Mr [surname], so for anyone red belt of below i would be Mr Lewis. This generally goes both inside and outside the dojang.

This is only changed when you know people outside quite a bit. However, we all go out drinking sometimes and I would always address my seniors as Mr [surname] apart from 2 that i know better.

I think in general its all due our instructors thinking that being over-friendly to the people you train with will inherently make your TKD weaker.

I'm only a brown belt.  I call my instructors/or anyone higher ranked; Sir, Maam, or Mr./Ms.'Mrs. Last name. I'm called Mr. Jones by the younger students, even if they outrank me, the older students are referred the same way.  It doesn't bother me to be called by my first name but it does show respect in the dojang.  It's funny though, one of the temp. black belts is a former college prof. of mine and during school she liked going by her first name. Nothing like sparring with college profs.
