I drink a lot of water, cut out the pop and consume protien shakes and other suppliments now.  My question is that I'm concern about not getting enough fruit servings in my diet, is 100% fruit juice ok?  I know natural fruit is best but just don't always have time to eat an apple.

i guess juice is better than koolaid.
but juice has a lot of sugar, too.  try making your own juice at home with fruits.  to make it as sweet as store bought juice, you will be amazed how much sugar you have to put in.  i use honey(real honey with chunks of hives still in them, not the store bought honey) instead of sugar when making juice...  sometimes vodka...

most of the nutrients are in the skin so you'll get some benefit from juice.  orange juice with pulp is better than orange juice without pulp, etc.  juice also has a higher glycemic index than fruit so like i can't really drink juice because it raises my blood sugar too much and makes my heart skip beats..

Most people don't eat enough fruit OR dislike eating fruit, so drinking fruit juice is one way to get your servings of fruit that is recommended in the Food Pyramid Guide.

A 8-ounce glass of 100% fruit juice can substitute for (but is not really equal to) one serving of fruit. Fruit juices are also part of the fruit group. Drink them as a single juice or combination of juices. Juices should be labelled 100 percent fruit juice, not fruit-ades or fruit drinks.

The AAP advises that half of your fruit servings from the Food Pyramid Guide can come from 100% fruit juice.

Here are some tips to help you eat more fruit servings:

http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/fruits_tips.html

And while true Danni that much of the nutrients in fruits are preserved in their skins (such as apples, pears, peaches)  ... you certainly wouldn't want to eat the skins of bananas, oranges or even pineapple!

Thanks for the advice everyone.  KC, the website was useful.  I like fruit but just don't always have time to eat all my servings.  The juice is to replace the last one or two servings for me.

Hey BH, KickChick is always on top of these things and her advice is spot on.  Take one look at her and you can see the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Fruit juice an acceptable way to get your fruit but read carefully.  A lot of juices will say 100% Fruit Juice MADE FROM CONCENTRATE!  I tend not to drink these.  I'd rather hit the health food section and pay more.  Another way to get your fruit, since you mention shakes, is to add some fruit to your protein shake.  Especially if you have a morning one like me.  Vanilla Whey, some skim milk, and a cup of blueberries, mixed berries, a banana, whatever you like, thrown in your morning shake is great!  Try it sometime and see if you don't agree.  I get a 5lb bag of Blueberries from Costco and add 1 cup to my morning shakes.

Ahhhhh!

Thank you sarge

Well I do cheat now & then,  everything in moderation   ...  I throw some chocolate chips into my shakes once in a great while (dark chocolate preferably )

especially  when I run out of those darn blueberries!

whenever i get fruits to make a smoothe, i put those fruits in the freezer (after i peel them if necessary).  and i just use frozen fruits as it is, making smoothe really thick (with no added ice).

A bit POSH are we KC?  No worries about the occasional cheat.  I highly recommend a cheat day for anyone that is very disciplined in their diet!  Helps keep those cravings away!
