Has anyone read the article in the July issue of Taekwondo Times about unification efforts on the part of the WTF and the ITF?

If so, what are your thoughts on the article?  Whether or not you read it, what are your thoughts on the subject of WTF/ITF unification?

people tend to think that merger would mean both doing the same pattern and such.  i wouldn't count on it though.  even after the merger, ITF will keep doing the way they were doing, WTF will keep doing what they were doing, and kukkiwon will keep doing what they were doing.  the only difference that the merger would bring is more interaction between each other.  WTF people will be able to compete in ITF, and vice versa.  either styles of patterns will be used for competition.  no "unification", just more open to each other to accomodate each other.

*i don't know anything about the merger, this is just the way i see it.  i could be very wrong, but i doubt it.

I haven't read the article.  My Grandmaster Woo Jin Jung is in support of the merger that is why we study both ITF and WTF forms ("home style" is what I've heard it referred as)  i personally think that a merger is needed.

I think that we should be more like the music world(I was in band in high school and college....one time at band camp...sorry) I know that a piece of music put in front of me will be read the same across the world. The notes have the same sound and chords are unison.  There is no difference in how music is written on a page, langugage is not a problem and music is seen as an unversal langague.  But the same can not be said for Martial Arts, a physical music for the body/

Before really getting involved in TKD I though it was all the same acroos the board, but there are major differences.  Why? I wish I had the answer.  I should never assume because alot of people thing all wrestling is the same and it's not which does hurt it.  Basketball the same way, there are differen't styles of play and now it struggles because of confusioin.  Has the popularity and mass expansion of the sports and the arts created these seperations?

I think that the short of it is that Kukkiwon will become the headquarters for both federations.  Kukkiwon has done a great job of marketing TKD and this is nothing short of a merger between 2 major industries.  The ITF will be able to benefit from that world recognized validation and Kukkiwon picks up $70 a head for every degree of BB.  All in all I'm sure it has a lot less to do with brotherhood under TKD and much more to do with the bottom line.

last weekend grandmaster choi and master trevor nicholls ( head of my group ) were over in south korea for a tournament that catered for both wtf and itf. i don't know if this has anything to do with a merger but add in the fact we have just changed the name of juche to ko-dang and things start to seem a bit more than a coincidence. could this be the start of something????

Regardless of what happens, it is an interesting time to be involved in taekwondo.  The art is less than a hundred years old, so we are privledged to see its developement fairly early in the game (speaking in very big picture terms).

I can tell you as a certified Referee there would have to be some change in forms though.  By WTF regulation all forms start and stop as the same spot which we do some ITF forms too and they do not so we teach the one that do fit that profile, so my question is will ITF change the forms or will WTF change the regulations?

Logically, it would seem that the form would either start and stop in the same place or start and stop in the place where it is designed to stop.  But we all know how seldom logic is employed when large entities start tussling over policy and procedure.

I am sorry but all ITF patterns are designed to end on the spot that they began on. So if one is not, they are obviously doing something wrong. They were designed that way from the beginning & since they were they 1st Korean forms, I would guess that others would do that as well. I am not sure if htis was the same for the Karate Katas that came before. Maybe someone else can comment on that.

I think you have to go over your ITF forms better. The first rule of patterns is that they begin and end in the same spot. If they don't then you must correct your stances or techniques.
