It seems like steroids are coming up in all different sports, Golf is creating a drug testing policy, US Congress going after the pros, Lance Armstrong. It seems like we are in world filled with proformacne enhancers. I was drug tested in high school and college "randomly" I was always questioned because of my strength, I was well known for picking up wrestlers and slamming them. I worked out like a mad man in high school but people just didn't seem to want accept that I didn't need the roids. I'll be honest I did consider it and even went as far as getting a persciption card filled out (easier then anyone really considers) but didn't turn it in to fill the bottle. I think the one thing that people don't realize is that steroids doesn't give big muscles it just helps the body heal faster and if don't with body builders workouts can bulk someone up but it's not guarnteed. I was interviewed by a college student who is doing a study for a summer course on Steroids in sports. I'm courious does anyone see Steroids as problem in Martial Arts or TKD? I can see in MMA but in MA, it doesn't seem to be an issue from my eyes. Anyone's thoughts?

It isn't something that I've heard about, but realistically, if someone believes that they can get a shortcut in a bottle or syringe, they will try to. USFA has a drug policy, even though roids and HGH are of virtually no help in enhancing one's fencing ability. Obviously, though, someone must have thought otherwise, else the issue would not have been addressed.
I would say that roids would provide no benefit for a taekwondo stylist, except that taekwondo is a bit more physically demanding than fencing. And since taekwondo is much like boxing or kickboxing (striking sport), there will be those who will go for the juice, unfortunately.

I am willing to bet my pay check that some Martial Artist, professional, has used roids to enhance their performance. NASCAR, Cycling, NBA, NFL, MMA, most professional sports, have had issues w/ steroid use. If not roids then it's doping (as in the blood doping in Cycling). Personally, for anyone that is not an elite athlete, I think using steroids has too many hidden dangers to be worth the risk. But, time and again, you will find someone who thinks that they need an artificial boost to compete and win. Sometime in life you just have to realize that you may never be the next Arnold Schwartznegger, the next Bruce Lee, or the next Tony Stewart. Face it, elite athletes are the exception, not the rule!
Learn to develope yourself to the best of your ability. Educate yourself on diet, nutrition, supplements and learn what works for you. If you give 100% to your training you will become the best that you can be (limited only by your instructors) and that still may not elevate you to the "elite" category! Sometimes, we just have to be happy w/ being "in the pack".

I agree with you Daniel, it would for sparring and breaking but you can teach anyone to break a board in a few mintues and teach the basics of sparring in 15 mintues. But not in forms in my opinion because those are skills that have to be developed and I don't think there is any way to check on good form.

I don't worry about becoming an "elite". I enjoy the art and want to make myself the best I can and be a good role model for the lower ranking belts. You and I have been a part of many forums talking about diet and nutrition so you know I'll agree with you on it being improtant.

I didn't mean you as in Baby_Huey. I meant you as in the martial artist. I could tell from reading that you are not one to use such things. Another reason not to use steroids is....... THEY ARE ILLEGAL TO USE (IN THE U.S.) W/ OUT A DOCTOR'S PRESCRIPTION!
Being that I am a retired police officer you can see another reason why I have never thought about using anabolics!

i've thought about it once and looked into it before. and once you do thorough research, you've got to be pretty stupid to use steroid. haha. people think that the major side effect is the shrunk boys. but shrunk boys means low testosterone level in the body, which means relatively high estrogen level in the system. and that will reverse some of the "gains" you had from the roid. not only that, roids are very toxic to human body, and people have to take special med to take care of those affected by roid, such as liver spots.
i've looked into prohormones as well, less toxic than roid, but still post cycle supplement are required as it results in lowered testosterone after the cycle.

Good points DB. Not to mention all the stuff you have to take to counter some of the side effects of anabolics. Stuff to conteract the acne, the male gynocomasty, liver enzymes, etc. Also, tests have shown that when ever you supplement, say w/ prohormones, your body can actually slow down it's production of the hormone your are taking. Not sure I want to mess up what the human body is fully capable of doing on it's own.

You have a vaild point my friend, sadly though getting a perscription is easier then most think. When I got my perscription note I was in the Doc's office maybe 30 mintues answering some questons in a certain way so the doc could claim no liability. There are some docotors who are more then willing to sign a perscription, right or wrong they are out there. There are people who need to take this stuff but my concern is that it's still way to easy to get your hands on them.

i've heard someone claiming that ending the cycle with gradual decrease in dosage can help prevent problems regarding shrunk boys, but still, waaaay too much risk with other side effects. (obviously, i don't care if it's legal or not. haha)

There will always be a way to get illicit drugs, weapons, etc. I am sure doctors have no qualms when it comes to writing scripts. Why should they? They get their money and the pharm. reps. will give them deals on their next purchase of meds! Steroids have their place for treating all sorts of ailments from burns to allergies! Being that I am also on bodybuilding forums I understand the draw of steroids to weight lifters. Yet I fail to see the reasoning if one is not already in the top eschalon of natural bodybuilding and needs that push to get him to the top of Mr. Olympia. It's just plain stupid for an 18 year old kid to want to do roids because he can't bench 300lbs! Taking it to Martial Arts, I wonder what VanDamme (obviously a well muscled Martial Artist) may have taken. What about Bolo Yeung ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001866/bio)? A very large Martial Artist w/ a background in body building.
