What should you do if you hyperextend one of your joints?
I know sometimes when im in class, when im in the moment and i kick or punch with all my force, i tend to hyoerextend either my elbow or my knee. I know what to do to prevent it, but what should I do to treat it if it happens again?

i hadn't been to a doctor for those yet - couple of occassions, very mild pain lasted for about 10 days, but no major episode.
for whatever joints that i'd injured, i just do slow full rotation of that joint, trying to keep the circulation of blood and lymph system going to that area. seems to work for me.

What can the athlete do to prevent elbow hyperextension injury? - Immediate treatment involves application of cold therapy and compression.
- Rest until symptoms resolve.
- Wear a support or heat retainer.
- Apply strapping to prevent the elbow from hyper extending (bending backwards) whilst healing.

This is certainly not uncommon expecially at belt testing.
It is funny that I am reading this now as I hyporextended my elbow last week in black belt class working on self defense combinations. I have kept it wrapped for the last couple of days while in class, laid off strenth training and hand strike combinations for my practice sessions. The only thing you can do is use it little, let it heal and wait a week or so after the pain goes away before you get back to regular practice. Hot tubs and steamrooms are also helpful for hypo, and normal wear and tear from classes and practice. I am not sure if you have a health club membership or not, but honestly I would recommand getting one. The first reason ofcourse is all the equipment you can use for working out, the next is for the empty practice space if you get there at the right time, and last and certainly not least the hot tube, steam room and pool for the aches and pains of classes.
