Do you think that inclusion in the Olympics has been baneful or beneficial to Taekwondo as a martial art?  And why?  I'm not asking prepared to debate anyone who feels differently than I do.  I am curious to get the feelings on the subject from a group taekwondoin of varying styles, which is what we have here.

Before I joined TKD I though it was similar to wrestling because all I saw was sparring and so I figure there were drills and stuff and all that was focused was sparring matches.  I wish there was better ways of promoting TKD and MA in general so people don't think it's all about just being able to round house kick someone in the head.   Even in the sport of wrestling, what is done in the Olympics, free-style and Greco-Roman, is different then what most American High school/college wrestlers know, folkstyle.

My school doesn't do Olympic sparring, I sometimes wish we did. In the Iowa games, for TKD they have forms and USAT ruled sparring, which I think would be cool for the Olympics to do forms.  I think people who are in the sport view the Olmypics different then those who are outside of the sport or arts in our case.

TKD is the only martial art that will be in the maritla arts recongize in Olympics after the China games.  Karate and Judo are off the list for the London games.

I thought forms were in the Olympics...I could swear I've watched videos of forms "From Athens 2004".

I don't remember seeing forms but I also wasn't looking directly for TKD either, major highlights always seemed to be sparring.

I feel it has been bad for TKD since it only includes a very small portion of the Arts. I was watching a competition on TV and I was BORED. It was a game of who can kick the chest pad fastest. BOB-BOB-BOB-BOB-FAINT-BOB-BOB-BOB-BOB-B0B-KICK/MISS-BOB-BOB-BOB-BOB--ZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
This is not Taekwon-Do. They are great atheletes and no one can take that away but TKD is more then a game of tag.

i feel that it has helped to spread tkd around the world and has made it a main stream sport. but i do wish that in olympic they would have more action!! they seem to "weigh each other up" so to speak for to long. it's fun watching regular tournamnnts!! I feel they have alot more action and less sizing up of each other!!! Don't get me wrong im very excited to watch olympics this summer, the korean team is soooo explosive. but i guess if our dojangs trained for 4-5 hrs daily we would be too!! (i live in the us)
