Last Saturday, we moved our Gaithersburg Dojang from Flower Hill Way to Industrial Drive.  Classes will begin at the new location on June 23rd, with a grand opening on July 5th.

Korean Martial Arts
16021 Industrial Drive
Gaithersburg, MD 20877
(301) 620-7171

Sounds great, right?  Our new location is huge, probably the largest martial arts school in the localized area.  We have a brand new 3000 square foot mat floor that is subdivided into numerous squares by color, a separate mat for learning breakfalls, takedowns, grappling, rolls, and such, ceiling fans, a huge heater and twenty foot ceilings, though the fans come down about fifteen feet.  The floor has a nice consistency for both taekwondo and kumdo, we've painted the walls nicely and put up banners.  In addition, we have a separate lobby, office, and rooms for an afterschool program and karate camp that Master Kim is introducing.

In short, this place is the bomb!  And its not even finished yet!  Hardwood flooring is coming for the entry to the mats, new standing heavy bags are coming to help out our aging Bob and mini-me Bob.  A whole new selection of kicking targets has been purchassed.

What's not to like?  Only the visibility.  In short, there isn't any.  Our dojang is located in warehouse space, which won't make a bit of difference for Kumdo; kumdo students seek you out and don't expect to find you on the local street corner.  But Taekwondo students tend to look for the signs.

So my question is this:  How many of you have schools located in warehouse space, or with no visibility?  Have you had success in bringing in customers inspite of this?  And if so, what did you do to overcome the visibility?

Thanks!

Daniel

Since I had an identical thread in events, and since nobody had responded to this one yet, I edited and retitled this one.

Thanks,

Daniel

The internet is a good resource for capturing potential students attention. There have been several students that have joined recently. They found us on the internet and because we answer just about any question you might ask on the web page, they came money in hand with no questions other than clarification of class times.

On another note, most students don't just join random schools. Word of mouth works best - but flyers with "come in to try us out" or "free class pass" work too.

i find it easier to look it up on internet than phonebook.  of course, if i still can't find what i want on internet, then i would look up the phonebook.

use the internet at its full value.

list your schools with yahoo and google maps. its free ya know.

put a letter on your old door saying that you have moved. this is to get people that are joining or returning

have other people link to your site and you link to theres.

get out the dojang with flyers and cards. talk to city officials.  do demos.  vol to do half time shows with lil soccer base ball games etc. even if you "rawr" people will still come.

have a back to school flyer and have your students pass them off at school. hit up the pta.

have a talk with the ISD  about 5 ways to be respectfully class and ask to teaching them in the beginning of the school year. do the same topic with  with respect. and have theis talk with the students

register as volunteer at the  schools thats your door in with the school. if possible become a sub teacher. i did. got me in the door.

have open house at your school

every mounth its it someones birthday in your student body. host a birthday party. have games where your uniform. have games like take down, who can jump over the belt master or instructor says. have two good students fight with hogu and put on a good show.

there are students that will help you most likely they have parents are if your parents are in class and students they have co workers etc give them flyer's and offer ufc parties for them.

ha ha ha parents night out. have students pay to attend the function games movies and pizza. they can bring a friend thats around the same age.

Here are a few ideas to help get your school rocking for 2008 & 2009. We do this type of multilevel marketing every month.

1. We have a monthly Buddy Day
2. We send out invitations to school activities
3. We do free community service events, like women's self-defense classes and children's safety classes
4. We have a regular schedule of social events
5. When possible, we have booths at local trade fairs
6. We provide speakers to speak at local events
7. Work with other businesses, like have the local pizza place add your flyers to their boxes, while you give students coupons for their business.

These types of event give you a chance to talk with new prospects. Word of month is great from all these sources.

All the BEST FOR 2008!!

Master Art Mason
