I just watched an old documentary on the Shaolin monks and all of the training that they showed was outside.  Ah, I now have grandios plans for the back yard!

I can see it now CT.  Round poles sticking out of the ground of various height so you can pactice balance.  Large concrete rollers to work on "iron" training.  A waterfall w/ a nice pool to practice kicking.

Don't forget to add the cool Chinese arches!

you know what's really good for balance?  practicing high kicks on rough terrain, like mountain.  as long as the ground is firm and not flat, it will do a hell of a job improving your overall balance.  kicking high on uphill (facing uphill not downhill) can also help (this can be on a flat surface as long as there's some sort of slope)

don't really have a specific "dojang" place at home (will eventually), but kids and i practice outside, in the dining room, anywhere we won't break something, and we do have some kidney target kicking pads we use. but for the most part it is where we can find the room!!! my next buy is a free standing bag, i saw this cool target thing you can set on top of your free standing bag that has paper targets on the ends of 3 arms. (i know it is hard to envision but if you get tkdtimes magazine it was in the front of mays issue) looks like it will work good for hook kicks and natabong! would like to get one of these also for when i don't have someone to hold pads for me!!!
