During my year long(so far) study of TKD, there have been some skills that I've learned that I wasn't expecting to pick up. I talking about things that I didn't realize were part of the art. One of the most recent ones was sewing.  I knew how to sew on a button but learning to hem new uniforms and sew on school patches was something I never expected to learn.  Trust me I'm not a seamstress but a useful skill to have.  What other skills have you all picked up that is not necessarly martial arts related?

not only the school patches fall off, writings on the back fell off few times.  i had been sewing to fix those since i was 7 or 8 (i grew up with lack of adult supervision.  ), and i taught myself how to use a sewing machine when i was 14.

some of my MA related techniques show up in the kitchen during cooking.  during my chef days, i was using so many fancy moves with pans and knives, a lot of cooks complained that they felt they were in danger.

also, ever since i saw jackie chan shifting gears while driving in one of this old movies (he was handling gear shifter as if it was one of the arms out of wingchun dummy), i shift like that as well.  sometimes though, i go straight to 5th gear from 2nd...

That's interesting you mention that...

You'll pick up a lot of skills through martial arts training, if you hang in long enough.

The skills for dealing with different people is a big one... a typical school sees people from all walks of life, from the rich to the poor, the highly educated to the more basically educated.  I've trained with doctors and other such professionals, cops, firefighters, industrial laborers, construction workers, school age kids, you name it...  Being able to communicate with everyone on level ground, and learning from them, is a crucial skill in life.

Don't know how to organize people and things toward a singular goal?  Participate in a community fund raiser with fellow students for a local charity.  You'll learn a lot from doing it, elevate the profile of your school, and help other people out at the same time.

A common theme in martial arts, is that we teach people to lead a better life THROUGH teaching them martial arts.  We do that being ACTIVE participants in LIFE, while we're studying martial arts.  We learn other skills, because the opportunity and necessity to learn them presents itself while we're doing what we do.

It's one of the most awesome things about martial arts training I can think of, and candidly speaking, it's one of the reasons I love martial arts.

I agree with ranger; I definitely learned how to deal with people, and how to come out of my shell.  I've learned so much, changed so much since I started training.  I am so grateful for TKD I cannot even explain!

If anything I definately learned that I am an Old Guy learning a young guy's art.  That people have different expectations of themselves and of TKD.  It was instrumental in bringing my son out of his shell.  I learned that I can take a punch, a kick, and a punch kick combination and still get up.  But most importantly I have learned that my wife will wait until I'm ready to walk out the door to go to class to remember something that she wanted me to do

A fellow ATA member, who is senior to me at 5th degree black belt, refers to his wife as SWMBO...(She who MUST be OBEYED)

I've not had the pleasure of being married, but I can see where that moniker really fits.  The old saying applies.*g*  "If mama's not happy... NOBODY is happy!!" LOL

In the grand scheme... that's not such a bad thing after all.  Keeps us guys grounded if we've got a loyal and strong woman to count on.

May of 2008 marks the 5th year for me doing tkd and the biggest thing i've learned is that mental strength beats physical strength anytime!! and i don't mean in fights i mean if you have mental strength you can overcome any obstacle that stands in your way!!!!!
