Seeing that this subject is coming up more frequently I thought that I would start a thread on websites that allow you to enter what you eat, enter your workouts, and spit out information for you that is useful.  If you are like me, the idea of writing everything down in a journal and counting each little calorie is mundane and downright tedious.  Enter the interwebz!  With everything from charts, to graphs, to food labels!  You can find it all now!  So now we have so much information that using these sites can be as bad as keeping a hand written journal.

I am new to the online nutritional sites so I only have 2 that I am trying out.  My favorite so far is www.fitday.com.  The site allows you to enter foods that you eat and even create "custom" food items (one of my custom foods is my Protein Shake).  Learning how to find the food items, entering the nutritional values can be a pains taking endevour for us NOOBs.  This is why I am starting this thread.  I am willing to help anyone that is interested in using these online tools so that you don't become frustrated.  Fitday is so cool.  Once you get the hang of it, you will see a day, a week, an entire month's worth of food that you have eaten broken up into a clear pie chart.  You Fats, Protein, Carbs, etc. will be broken down into percentages and grams.  You can check to see if you are getting the RDA of vitamins and minerals to.  You can enter your workouts to see if you are eating enough to power your through your training or lose that spar 10 pounds.  Below is an example I have from Fitday for one day of eating.  Comments, questions, remarks, are all allowed and encouraged!

I mentioned in another post that www.sparkpeople.com is also a great website for keeping track of calories, nutrition, and how much you workout per day. It's a great online community for people trying to lose weight or just trying to be more aware of what they eat and become healthier.

So taekatdo  uses www.sparkpeople.com.   I use Fitday and FitNRG right now.  I am seeing which one I like better.  Which one is more user friendly.  Which is easier.  Which one fits into my lifestyle.

my nutrition consultant happens to be my bank.  if i have enough, i'll eat healthy, and if not, bologne sandwich it is.

i spend quite a bit on food because i eat mostly organic food.  i also stay away from "white" food, such as flour, sugar, rice, etc, and i eat brown stuff.  after my lower back injury, all i did was teaching for few years without breaking a sweat, and i gained well over 60 lb in 4 years.  but, even though i was eating a lot, because i ate organic food, all my numbers (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, etc) are in the healthy region...  well, except for weight and body fat %...  lol.

No problem action!  Glad to help.  I am leaning towards fitday as my "go to" site but I haven't had the chance to check out sparkpeople yet.  I will test that for a week and see how it stacks up.  Dealing w/ 3 websites is going to be tedious but I am willing to give it a shot for you all!

Thanks narcsarge for posting this info on FitDay.com  I have passed this link on to some of my clients/students ... and have tried it myself.

Unfortunately I am not too good at keeping up with logging on all the stuff I eat and my workouts!

I've tried doing something similar once before online and you really need to bee good at logging on and making sure you keep up with it or at least write it down and then at the end of the day post it on the site.

I Know what you mean, I started to do this and was all Gon Ho about it but after few days, I've not logged on.  I need to get more organized and commit to this, ofcourse Commitment is not one of my forte.

Glad to help Deb.  True, it does take a bit of determination to maintain the log, but if someone has made the decision to take control of their health and fitness, this is just another tool for one to use.  As I have said, I will use these tools as long as they don't become tedious and overwhelming.  It has to be useful and fun to use.

A friend on another forum that has been using FitDay for awhile was wondering yesterday if counting calories "precisely" was maybe going into OCD territory.  I think, as w/ most things, that using these sort of sites should be done to get a big picture of one's eating habits.  I know that I am surprised at some of things my log has shown but I don't get so serious that I am counting each calorie ingested and each calorie burned.  That would just be way too complex!
