i heard banana's good for cramps.  but i suggest banana before sparring, for the entirely different reason (i.e., it tastes just about the same coming back up as it went down...)

another reason why you might have cramps could be that you didn't drink enough water. Just to make sure before any hard training, you should always drink lots of water till you're full and then just pee out the excess. I would start drinking water 1hr before and then you should have enough time for the excess water to come out.

Personally, one hour is more than enough. A lot times all I need half an hour before I train and then I'm ready.

Don't drink too much though. Drink only till you're full.

I find that if I drink just before I start then all the water in my stomach makes me feel sick, particularly when doing press ups or something similar.

you don't want to drink too much right before.  but you do want to drink plenty throughout the day.

Drink water about a half hour before the workout. It will have time to settle in. It's the same rule I grew up concerning eating and swimming. Don't swim during the first 30 minutes after eating because it will put some pressure on the stomach, which makes it harder to digest food.

I have heard that grapefruit is good for cramps. Bananas are, too.
