i find taping doesn't really help. taping usually makes it harder to make a fist quickly, and it may lead to more injuries. it's easier to just keep tight fists the whole time.

Oww Mike. What about gloves like those sparring gloves on Mooto? I've used workout gloves before, but it's still kinda unpredictable, so maybe Doughboy's right by keepin your fist clinched...I know I'm guilty of keepin my hands open, even against fast/hard kickers.

those "wtf" gloves wouldn't help much, since they still leave your fingers open. you need something that covers entire top of the hand, like karate gloves.

My guys, (and I) have had good luck with the WTF gloves - mainly becuse they have a piece of foam that runs across the palm - so its encourages them to keep their fingers closed. I had my left Ring Finger kicked last summer - needed surgery to straighten it out because it cracked the joint. I have had my fingers Jammed a ton of times, but htis was much worse - you can see the X-Ray pics below. Blog Post - X Ray pictures of T-Plate-Broken Finger

It seems that i block half the time with a knife-hand and half with a fist..

I don't think taping helps either, good tight fists are the only answer!

I had a left ring finger get kicked when I was holding a board for an 8 year old female green belt at a competition. She kicked and I (along with everyone else) heard a pop. There was pain instantly. The judge had someone else hold the board because she didn't break the board. The finger felt wooden and I hadn't competed yet. In sparring, I kept the other hand in front and sparred. It hurt like the dickens. Afterwards, I put ice on it. When I got to Wal-Mart, I bought a finger splint and it felt instantly better after I put it on. I went to the doctor, had it x-rayed, and found out the tendon had been stretched (she said that's what made the pop). I was out of commission for a few weeks, then had to use a ball to strengthen it.
I know your finger had to hurt, too.
