02/07/08--friday morning i woke up early, really early like at 4:45am.. i couldn't fall back asleep, i was going to be sparring in a couple of hours..i sort of went into a half sleep thinking about the upcoming fights, going over different scenarios with the most likely fellow students who might show up for friday morning fight class..after about 20 min i gave up trying to sleep, got dressed and made a good breakfast. as i was finishing my coffee i had a revelation about sparring. it hit me that i was always tryng to figure out what moves to use when..and what to do if this and that happens..but all i really have to do is go out and have fun and it will come naturally..this morning i sparred like ive never done before..i always have fun when i spar, but today i just didnt care about being perfect, i just went with the flow.....u know what? it was great!!! i was seeing things before they happened, like attacks and defenses..kicks and punches thrown at me seemed slow and uncoordinated, while i had some combos that just came from nowhere...i remember reading somewhere about a warrior state of mind that can be achieved that reminds me of what i experienced today..not just a good day sparring, but the feeling of transcending into something 'better', just for a while...pretty freaking cool!!

I think its awesome you had this enlightenment.  Although its good to have training and preperation to what to do in certain situation, sometimes I think its best to let your body flow and go with what is happening at the moment.

I don't like to plan any moves but instead train myself to be able to react to what is happening at the moment.  Its good to have those scenarios in your head prior to sparring but having the ability to react at that exact moment is what makes sparring fun for me.

Sparring is the time that I learn the most because it allows me to figure out my own reaction time.  Sometimes in my head I am directing to throw a certain kick but my body just don't react as quickly anymore.  So this is where I learn more about my body and what my limitations are.

I find trying to plan your moves etc no help whatsoever
I've tried in the past and it just doesn't work
I've watched others sparring and thought - oh I could try that etc
Every fight is different and it's impossible to plan as you don't know whats coming
You're right when you say you should have fun, it does come naturally, plus you enjoy it all the more, and remember you're not going to win every time
We hae a young lad at our club who became the World Champ last year, he is an awesome fighter who has a great future in front of him, however he is really hard on himself.  At a comp recently he got knocked out and was so down on himself, I reminded him that he is a great fighter and that even champs can have their off days, I also think he puts himself under a lot of pressure to maintain his winning status, therefore I believe he is not relaxing or enjoying the sparring anymore, still he's only young - most of the time the young don't listen, so I shall just continue to give him my encouragement
