Exclusivism in the Martial Arts

Health & Fitness

Not too much has changed about my routine. I am focusing more on "power" rather than hypertrophy these days. I've replaced my vertical pull exercises with a routine to increase my endurance with pull ups and chin ups. I'm about to turn 27, and have been wanting to go into my late 20's with a bang. My goal is to main a record that I recnetly broke. Using a conservative estimate, I was able to just break 6:30 in the mile. I'm hoping I can find some time in the next couple of weeks to achieve that. Afterwards, during the late fall/winter, I'll focus more on endurance with the 5km.

Martial Arts

I find that there is a great amount of exclusivism in martial arts today. This may deal with how one school does a form compared to another, or whether one aspect of a martial art (or the art itself) has any use.

I get the feeling that some of the people at my BJJ class hold their tongues about other martial arts, since they know I'm one of the TKD instructors. As someone who claims to do things out of function, I think some people wonder why I'm still doing TKD. Well...one of my favorite aspects of the art is the one where people most debate it's usefulness....forms

Doing open hand forms is one of my favorites things. I don't do the forms (or TKD in general) so people will be impressed. I simply do it for coordination, as well as a love for the artistic portion.

I suppose it all comes back to the judgemental mind. However, in the end, I think everyone should take time out of theur days to really discover why they are still in martial arts.
