The best thing you ever did?
Posted On 10/02/2008 06:08:53 by Jinxi

What was the best thing you ever did?

That was one of the topics on a national radio phone-in show this morning. One guy said it was leaving England for Sweden - he loves England, he said, but he loves the quality of life in Sweden more... and his Swedish girlfriend.

For someone else, it was having cosmetic surgery on her eyellids to stop them being so droopy.

Another guy said tracking down his dad's family in Poland.

And it got me thinking. What is the best thing that I've ever done? I've achieved or almost achieved quite a lot. I won an American scholarship to help pay for university... but ended up not going.

A couple of years ago I won the sports writer of the year award for our chunk of the country.

And this time last year, I beat off 1,500 people to win a prestigious traineeship at the BBC.

It's all good stuff - stuff that I can be proud of. Moving in with my boyfriend was a decision I will never regret and one that brings me happiness every day.

But when I thought about it, the best thing I have ever done is go back to tae kwon do.

Things happen when I'm in training - I'm confident, I'm happy, and things don't seem quite so tough as they did. I got that traineeship after returning to TKD - and there's no doubt in my life the two are connected.

I'm fitter than I've probably ever been (although not right now) and I'm constantly motivated to do more, learn more, try new things and practice, practice practice.

And most of all, it has given me a social life in a city where I didn't previously have one - a sense of purpose, a connection to a community and friends.

I'd say that makes TKD a pretty good thing

What's the best thing you ever did?

That's incredible Narcsarge... Must have been scary - especially being so young. People have different beliefs but I always believe that people come into each others lives for a reason - friends, enemies, heroes, victims whatever. It's a good job you were there when you were. Have you ever seen her since?
