Olympic TKD Coverage
Posted On 08/19/2008 01:37:12 by tkdgold
Is it just me or is anyone else upset that there is no Television coverage of the TaeKwonDo portion of the Olympics?

Being in Korea, I'm sure that the Korean stations will televise the competition but most of the time they will sit there and talk about how very good Korea is and how not very good everyone else is!

We have 2 great story lines for this year's TKD portion of the Olympics.  First, Steven is going for his 3 Olympic Gold and hasnt lost a match in like forever!  Second, having his brother and sister competing it's become the first family in TaeKwonDo to ever compete at the same time for an Olympic medal, second family Gymnist Mr Hams probably being the first!

As a member of the media (many friends working NBC), in the US TV stations are based on outdated demographics.  NBC is targeting the women audiences because men traditionally have baseball, now football to keep them occupied. About the only event that has higher men then women is women's beach volleyball and maybe basketball.  With women being the target audience they want to show them things that either they want to see gymnastics and swimming or something that they can go and do right away.  I know many people can't just get up and go and ride a bike for 100 miles or run a marathon but it is possible to get up and go run or ride a bike. Not to many people can get up and go spar a match with pads and control like so many of us can. The biggest problem with putting TKD on the tube is that there are not a lot fo commentators that can talk about the sport intellengently and bring in so that the common viewer can understand, the division between ITF and WTF creates part of this problem. That is part of the reason it's up for vote after the games to remove it for 2012.  Plus the according to the out date demographics, the majority of women are opposed to combat sports.

I wish it did sweetheart! I know that there are several different ways of watching the event via internet! It's just that I'm disappointed that it's not being televised!  I mean they put Kayaking on TV and that's boring as hell but they dont put TKD!
