Martial Arts tattoos
Posted On 07/28/2008 01:43:26 by DaveSaunders
I'm a bit of a fan of tattoos. I have 5 at the moment and will prob get a few more soon. What are your thoughts on Martial arts tattoos? I mean you dont wanna become a target for having a tattoo stating that u know karate/tae kwon do etc.....Its just asking for trouble really isnt it?

However i was considering getting the 5 tenets of tae kwon do done on the back of my arm? Only someone that knows the art will know what it means and its not really advertising tha fact that i know any tae kwon do.

Tae Kwon do is going to be a life long interest for me so i think i may go ahead an do it. :-)

Woo hoo!Another tattoo fan yeah!I love tattoos.I got one I designed myself which says taekwondo in korean and has a flying kick at the bottom.I love martial arts tattoos, well I love any lol! Well anyone who doesn't do taekwondo won't have a clue what the tenents are or mean. They'll probabally think it's some buddhist terminology lol! A lot of people judge tattoos but then some people judge evrything on people i.e. whether they are fat, thin, goth, punk etc.Don't worry about what people think it's what connection the tat has with you not someone else. You won't become a target for people just cos you have a tattoo.Besides we all learn taekwondo as self-defence so anyone who attacks you will get a surprise lol! If you want to chat my e-mail is : buddhamaster@live.co.uk  I'm on msn if you have that and want to add me.Good luck with your tattoo adventures.

Thanks for your comment jfearless, i appreciate your views and honesty. Whilst i share some aspects of your opinion; i agree that people good or bad can look upon someone who has tattoos and make judgement, I have tattoos and i have a shaved head yet this is what i am comfortable with (i'm slightly balding so just thought id beat nature to it lol), im anything but a thug or any other stereotype given to someone of my appearance.

The main thing is that i am happy with who i am, at the end of the day its not my problem if people are narrow minded and judge only by my appearance, however i do the very same thing when looking at other people, we all do its human nature. I wouldn't change who i am or my appearance to fit in to a social group and i wouldn't expect anyone else to do the same if it were the other way around. People can think what they like, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The most important thing is that people are happy with themselves.

When bringing Tae kwon Do into it its slightly different and i share your views, and if superiors were to find tattoos offensive then i would have certainly thought twice about beginning Tae Kwon Do. As it is many people i train with do not oppose the idea including my instructor and many have tattoos themselves. I respect my body and i am very focused and train and practice hard to be the best i can be with this art. The fact i have tattoos does not change that or hinder my performance and does not mean i do not respect myself or the art. Having a blatant martial arts tattoo which basically states to the whole world ' i'm skilled in such an art, i'm dangerous (lol)' is something i would never do and is  something i don't find sensible at all.

I take no offense from your comment and very much appreciate your views; this was the reason for posting this blog.

Cheers!

Regarding martial art tattoos, I have a tattoo on the lower part of my calf with our class emblem of a hog performing a side piercing kick. I really love it and it reminds me always of my love for my class and my instructor. Of course he gave permission before I did it! I have never regretted it.

I say to each their own. I have a few tats myself.  On one leg I have a Beaver in wrestler singlet, my college mascot was a Beaver and I wrestled, there was a logo on the wall that most of us got.  I also have Wrestling in Greek on my other leg, I plan on getting Tae Kwon Do in Korean done in the future.  I would wait a year to make sure that is what you really want.  No one sees my tats exepct my gf and doc which is fine for me it's for me and no one else.
