Well, what a surprise!
We all know before training yesterday that our instructor was on holiday and so we were all fully expecting a good work out by some 3rd/4th degree instructors. We were very surprised when we walked into to the Dojang to find our instructors instructor Master Roy Oldham VIII fully dobok'd up and waiting to take our class. Master Oldham has been training for over 40 years (started in 1967) and was one of the first 12 disciples of UK TKD being one of the first few Black Belts in the UK. Master Oldham was trained by Master Rhee Ki Ha.
The session started off with a very quick warm up and quickly developed into a good 20 minutes of study the pattern Chon-Ji and an explaination on how Chon-Ji is asuperb pattern for developing raw power and technique due to its simplicity whilst still encompassing and the fundimental basics of TaeKWon-Do. We then moved onto other patterns up to Joong Gun before starting 2 step sparring. Master Oldham gave us a demonstration of how to practice releases and set sparring at full power and quite a few people will have the bruises for many days to prove it.
The 90 minutes was over far too quickly and Master Oldham pointed out at the end that it was the first time in over 10 years that he performed a full training session with a coloured belt group so we all felt very privileged!
It wasa great session and the students who missed it will be kicking themselves on Monday!!!
