You do what?
Posted On 07/08/2008 23:46:55 by gz250
You go to a family reunion, spouse's work related gathering, or any other social crowd that only requires your presence once in a blue moon and you will undoubtedly be asked this right out of the can question, "So.... what do you do?" When I tell them I teach Tae Kwon Do in my own studio, they are dumbfounded. "You teach what? Ki twon do? What's that?" (Secretly I am thinking, what cave have you been in?) But, I am nice and tell them enough for them to understand. But, I am so excited about it that I sometimes go overboard. I can't help it. I enjoy what I do so much I want to share it with everyone.  I have gotten comments that have been really good to hear like "That is really cool that you have your own school!" Even instructors like to hear positive feedback. I am proud of what I teach and the positive changes I have seen in my students. So, when someone asks, "What do you do?" I proudly exclaim, "TAE KWON DO! Want to join me?"

For the sake of your sanity do not tell them you are a systems administrator...you'll be there all day fixing their computers.

When I tell people that I am an editor(or reporter) I always get "I hope I'm not being quoted", "Why does the media seem so one-sided" and "Oh, are you going to have job soon with everything going online?"

Business card perhaps? I know it so, kinda, 80'sish to throw out a business card but hey, I got bored telling people I ran my own lawn maintenance company.  I would hand them a business card and then, if they had more questions, I would give them my sales pitch.  No need to waste my time w/ people that were being rhetorical.
