My TaeKwonDo Experience
Posted On 06/05/2008 23:26:39 by joyfulnoise
I am LOVING the Tae Kwon Do classes here on Yongsan's Army Post here in South Korea.  Grand Master Kim is our teacher.  He teaches us what we must know to pass the Kukkiwon black belt test.  Since we're in South Korea only for a few years at the most, Master Kim helps us to strengthen our bodies and minds quickly.  The opportunity to test at Kukkiwon was unbelievable, intimidating, and powerful all at the same time.  It's a loud place with many, many students testing and families watching.  I still can't believe I had the chance to do that alongside my 4 kids, husband, and several classmates.  What a memory!

I know there's a lot more to learn and that the classes in the States teach many other things (like board breaking and cool jumping over people kicks), but I'm so thankful that Master Kim worked us hard, expected much of us, and taught us what we needed to know to experience getting our black belts here in Korea.  I am humbled when I think about all I still have to learn, but I take it one class at a time.  I'm so thankful for many classmates who've given me help (THANKS LARRY!).  Thanks to Larry, I've gotten a taste of the other fun tkd stuff like board breaking and working out to peppy music.  I hope to continue tkd wherever our family moves.

Wonderful essay on your TKD experiences.  At least when you get back to the states, you will be in better physical shape then most other students.  Thank you for sharing...

if you get a chance, go watch 4th and 5th dan black belt test.  keep your eyes on for those who are 18-24 yr old.  they are the ones who had been in elementary, middle, and high school tkd teams, and they are the ones who went to university for tkd.  they are the ones who will do tkd for living.  and their level of skills are just amazing.  i started tkd when i was 4, and made it to elementary, middle and high school tkd team.  but when i started high school, i moved to canada, and i started going little easy on myself, while others only trained harder.  i had known a lot of people in my age group in tkd from all the tournaments, and when i went back to korea to test for 4th dan, i couldn't believe how much they had improved.  i met 7 people whom i knew from elementary and middle school tkd tournaments during my testing, sparred with one of them, and i couldn't believe i was getting schooled by him, because i'd beat him twice, once in grade 6, and once in grade 8.  and it wasn't like i was going super easy on myself, since i just had won BC middle weight championship couple months before.  and after that, i'm still hesitating to test for my 5th dan, even though i was allowed to test since 2005.
