PARENTS PLEASE READ
Posted On 02/23/2008 12:09:51 by irishtkd

Today's public schools have become very run down in the Atlanta area. I belive that a lot of "Downtown" schools have become run down, which has forced many parents to belive that the only way they can ensure their children get the proper academic teaching is either by home schooling or by enrolling their children into private schooling.

The nice thing about private schooling is the fact that the school is not bogged down with as many federal and state regulaions as the public schools. They have the uniquie possibility to not only offer students the traditional "3 Rs" or reading, writing, and arithematic. But they can also offer classes such as "Russian", and other foriegn languauges other than the traditional spanish or french.

I am presently starting to look into what it would take to get Taekwando taught in schools. The class would be a lot more than just a gym class. Students would have to contiually learn and practice the tenants of taekwondo as well as the physical parts of TKD as well. The one thing that would be different in this class though, would be the fact that students would wear the same belt the whole year. At the end of a "school year" is when they would be "belt tested" as if they were taking their final tests.

Without getting into the whole explanation of my idea, which hasn't been fully developed yet, would partents be open to a class that was taught this way in their child's school? I know on this web-site I am going to probably get a positive response...but I figured I would ask on this site first because my idea is just that right now. I am still trying to come up with a workable class that would incorporate everything taught on the physical side, but also teach students about "the way of" principals taught in TKD as well.

Pretty soon we will have a generation of children that have learned it is ok to talk back to their teachers and elders. Children who have had no tv regulations or internet usage regulations instilled in them. I fear that our country is rotting from the inside out and we need to change the way children are taught to behave before it is too late and we are crushed by our very principles that started this country. Freedom of speech has become a freedom to say whatever or whenever...even if it is rude or unappriopriate. All men are created equal has become a way of one getting their way instead of a treatment we should give to everybody. Plus it has become a way we treat criminals as if it is ok for them to behave badly but still DEMAND to be treated like the rest of us who follow rules and treat people with respect. Elders are looked as slower and stuck in thier ways instead of people that have more experiance at life then us younger.

My question to parents out there is this....

Do you think having a class that focuses on this will be helpful in in our schools and would it make any kind of difference for the future of our children or this country?

Yeah, I agree with TKD_Hortkid. There are some issues we need to iron out in Martial Arts.

Students will have different paces of learning and maybe promoting them after a school year might be detrimental. Some just won't care about martial arts and some might just use it as an excuse to start playground fights. If something like this is organized. We really need to find a dedicated Master as these schools are in a rough neighbourhood.

I kind of like what they are doing up here in Vancouver,BC where you can get school credits for taking martial arts outside of school. So in school you don't need to take a PE class. But not much emphasis is done on learning the tenents of TKD or any values whatsoever.

So yeah, it is a good idea to put it in school. We just need to iron out some issues.

A class like this would be excellent. The downside is this has been an idea for over a couple of decades and as the legal system becomes more and more full of "get rich lawsuits" and people who don't want to get fat but will look up any good reason as to why getting fit can be somewhat of a liability, the opportunity for classes like this won't necessarily make it in US public schools. I would love it if we could go public with martial arts regardless of if it's TKD or Karate or Kung Fu, something that teaches or instructs children into a more obidient direction. Unfortunetaly, in our day and age, it's just so hard to get that to happen. Promoting martial arts to some parents is not going to go over well, esp. when even in our dojangs and dojos, we have everything from people with either a lazy attitude or a fiece attitude, to others who abuse the power as an instructor/master, further damaging that reputation that martial arts can help with behavoir and emotional issues. I'm sure with enought future thought and effort, there's still a chance we can make something happen.
