teaching on my own
Posted On 03/19/2008 19:54:19 by Danni
I'm going to start teaching TKD on my own, without my instructor or anyone else.  I agreed to teach some of the Korean students who are teaching me Korean language and culture, sort of like returning a favor.  I'm a little nervous but mostly excited.  Wondering if anyone has some advice for me.  It's not like I haven't taught before, I've lead class many times before, but the new school thing is what's making me nervous.

Well, with your experience, you already know that going into every class with a plan is important.

My advice... just be professional... give them time to develop with patient nurturing and lots of positive encouragement... make sure they have FUN, but do so safely.

And, if you put their development and welfare first and do your best... you'll do fine.  By now I'm sure you know... you're going to learn a lot from them... Perhaps even learn more from them, than they do from you.  That's good... that's how it usually works out.

Just remember... your instructor wouldn't have stuck you in front of the class at 12, if your instructor didn't see something special in you.  Believe in yourself, and believe in your students, and treat every single one as a special individual in their own right and help them grow into their own personal best, at their pace, in the direction they want to go as a human... and you'll do great.

(And don't be afraid to talk to other instructors and black belts when you run into issues to get some ideas to consider when you're trying to decide how to proceed to handle those issues.  Just remember... they're your students, so you must make the decisions according to your experience and conscience for their benefit.)

Have a blast ma'am!!  I think teaching is the best job in the world!

What an exciting opportunity
Relax and enjoy it
If you come across as nervous etc the students will pick up on it

The other cool thing about teaching, which I'm sure you're discovering, is that YOU learn a lot about TKD too. It's the best way to really learn the Art.

IcemanSK has very good advice.  Just be yourself and be patient.

Be yourself, be excited (or at least happy) to be there, & be patient. They're new to this, yet they'll want to do it perfectly the 1st time. Chances are, they'll fail at THAT. Act as if you have all the time in the world to help them through it, & they'll work on it more.
