What do you think..?
Posted On 03/13/2008 00:20:07 by neo-wagner

All right, so at ATA(Burien) we have to start this new method of board breaks. I think it's ridiculous, but somewhat ironic. By wearing our hand and feet gear, we break the boards now like kicking a wavemaster or a pad, with the top of your foot or the side of your hand, etc. It's nice that our hands and feet are padded now, but that kinda takes away the point of board breaking. :/ How should I put this...

Anyways, I find this ironic because we have about 4-7 1st degree recomended blackbelts and they struggle the most with board breaks. At the last regional blackbelt testing, NONE of them passed bacause of board breaks. Now, by wearing hand and feet gear, board breaking seems to be a bit easier. It's a bit annoying in a way for me 'cause I have to get in the habit of keeping my toes down when I kick the board. >:(

I don't see why they're making board breaks easier, I had to earn my blackbelts through pure power and practice(execution, hands up, etc, etc). Is this just to increase the amount of blackbelts?

Am I just being the stubborn teen I am, or do I have SOME logic? Ha ha, anyway, comment back. :3

I definetly think that it is not a good Idea if you do the kicks or punches right you should not hurt your self much!! I think it is just making it easyer it should not be made easier there is no reason for that. people have done it the other way and it was not a problem that way!!!

Maybe it's not so bad, but I don't think I'd like that too much. I never used pads and never needed pads. For brown or red we had to do two nadabahns (sp?) which I guess would be a backwards-spinning 360 roundhouse. I don't know what else to call it. Anyhow... the point is that we had to break using the top of our feet on these breaks and I never saw anyone get hurt doing it.

(Wish I could say the same for side kicks, but that was just my hand that was hurt by a guy who couldn't aim a side kick.)

I'm sure this is probably due to some kind of liability thing but I'm a bit too traditional to think that sounds good. Although I hear that re-breakable boards hurt to punch, so maybe for those it would be a good idea.

Anyway... to actually answer your question... you definitely have some logic there. defeats the purpose IMO.

Does seem a bit odd. Some questions though:

1. Is this for the whole school?
2. What kind of boards are you using?
3. What kind of breaks are you doing exactly?
4. How often does your school break boards?
