Genuine taekwondo; McDojo or Traditional style.
Posted On 07/10/2008 13:56:44 by CelticTiger
With all the talk I see about what's traditional taekwondo and what isn't, I'm going to ask what some may feel is a heretical question.  Does it really matter if its traditional or not?  Back when what we call, 'traditional' was the only thing in existence, there were genuinely good schools and lousy schools.  The lousy ones we don't hear about; they didn't last.  The good ones became the original kwans and survived.  An over simplification, but you get the drift.... What makes a traditional school traditional?
Posted On 06/24/2008 08:20:48 by CelticTiger
I've written quite a bit about McDojo recently, so now I'm  turning my pen towards the the traditional school.  But what defines a traditional school?  A recent discussion chanced upon just that question: what defines a traditional school?  One of the participants answered that a traditional SCHOOL is one that "knows the art".

Posted On 05/28/2008 13:08:57 by CelticTiger
I'd like to share few thoughts on the subject of of McDojos/McDojangs.  The subject come up frequently on fourms and in magazines.

It is always a pejorative that no SCHOOL wants applied to them and is often applied to large chain schools and/or watered down schools.  But what makes a McDojo so bad?

The common gripes are generally such: there is a bit of the belt for sale issue, preoccupation with Olympic style sparring or some other form of spor... Read More

Korean Martial Arts open house
Posted On 05/12/2008 17:51:21 by CelticTiger
Saturday was our Frederick Maryland open house.  We had four spaces in the parking lot at the festival in the shopping center.  We set up our mats and our gear and prepared for morning and afternoon demonstrations.

Thoughout the day, we had a nice crowd around us and the demo went quite well.  The taekwondo demos included all belt levels, both sparring and forms.  The breaking was mostly higher belts, and was quite a crowd pleaser.  Master Deb broke multiple board... Read More
