It used to be drag racing and the dogs but the dogs have turned into a 2nd & 3rd job.

Drag racing is expensive since the fuel prices have gone up so much but it is INCREDIBLY good advertising for

=======================================

Tae Kwon Do at our studio is about bringing people together for a united cause and betterment of all. Don't compare your self with others. Compare yourself with your last workout.

--------------
Tested for yellow or advanced yellow with General Choi on the panel back in 1970-something in Fayetteville at Leon Snearly's Power Company. I didn't know who it was at the time.

---5 lines deleted----

There were three (3) of us testing for 1-D and we were our instructor's first Black Belts.

Tae Kwon Do can be good if practiced with good form or bad for you when you do it wrong. Always seek qualified instruction and not just someone with a lot of stripes on belt. My instructor was only a 2-Dan and Duggan was a 4th.

Maintain the ability to learn from anyone.

I have learned things from junior white belts... "Turn 1/2 way for the first move and then step punch...turn all the way for the next (#3) move and step punch." Chon-Ji made easy.
The above statement took three weeks off of learning Chon-Ji, on average.

I learned from a Yellow belt lady that a lot of techniques are designed for use against equal size opponents and we may have to adjust entry techniques from time to time to compensate for it.

Don't be afraid to realize you don't know everything. I learned something very important from Junior the other day ( the little dude in the photo having a drink with me):
"Somedays its better to just stop and have a juice box."

Cup half empty or half full?

I like to landscape when I get a chance.

My squad buddy "quah" worked with D.E.A. and was/is/went to (?) Blackwater. Yes, THAT Blackwater. Hey Thomas. How's sunny Afganistan treating ya? Stop eating bugs off my backpack! They ain't gonna starve us..
Just out of curiosity, what do they taste like and will those green ones sting?

My other bud operates war games training ops.
Hey Duane.
We were all in C.A. together in KAIBIL school, El Inferno...

Drag racing is always a rush. She does the parachutes, straps me in and lines me up correctly on the track. Nanette also reminds me to turn on the pumps and computer recorder. Two up and one down! 140+ in an 1/8th mile and getting ready to go a lot faster this year.

==============================

The pups..Doberman Pinschers. We have quite a few Dobermans...three males one female pups and we have both parents. Bartlett's Sampson of the Hoytt line of Dobes and Madame Gypsi of Wild Acres of the Brunswig's Cryptonite line... AKC

Sampson will open your soda for ya so don't sit it down where he can get to it. He screws the lid off and drinks half, too.

Gypsi is very wel behaved and is very good at her commands...IN KOREAN. Choon-Be!

It's mine. Come visit on some Friday night. 7:00 is good for me. Just be warned, we punch to the head...pretty hard, too.

Side doors are for barfing... bathrooms are NOT. Plan to train hard when you come here.

If you break a nail..we will NOT call 911!

Our MMA Instructor is also 4/1 Marine Force Recon.

I was MMA since the 80's, just didn't know everyone else wasn't. I just thought all schools trained the same. That's how we learned "traditional" Tae Kwon Do.

We also do the acrobatics that Century calls XMA. We won the Bluegrass Nationals (5A NASKA) with our team in 2005.

Now, what more could a person ask for? Come see why everyone is training at,,,, Karate World of Oklahoma, LLC. 918-422-5145

Thank you sir as always for the phone call last night. Sorry I keep missing you. It's next to impossible to reach me by phone, but I certainly appreciate you continuing to try and passing on what is working for you with the marketing. We have been hitting it hard here. I finally managed to get my foot in the door at two Elementary Schools where we did a "Welcome Back" for the teachers and staff with ice cold drinks on their last workday before school started. I also gave each teacher 5 VIP cards to use as prizes in their classrooms. Just a little last minute name recognition thing before the kids came back. Hopefully it's just the beginning of a working relationship with them. We won't get to see you at Nationals, the girls have a Soccer game that day and I'm running for School Board and have a Parade and a Festival I have to attend. Take Care Sir and please keep those ideas coming.

Thank you Sir for the 30 sec. marketing blitz. I started getting the cards out the next day. I think 30 new people all at once would be an exciting change from what the economy around here has provided us with lately. That other change is going to be a very hard sell though. Tell that baaaaad lady of your's congrats on the testing for me please. As always thank you Sir for your leadership.
Mr. Warman

Always a pleasure to hear from you Sir! I really like your first book selection! "I am a person, no matter how small". What's up with the NPTA website?

And thank you for the compliment sir.:)

It's taken me a couple of years of fiddling with a business plan, doing tons of homework and tinkering with a vision for a studio of my own, to really think through how I felt about a lot of issues and trends in the martial arts world.

It didn't take too long to apply conventional business knowledge I learned in high school about 'doing it the old fashioned way, one satisfied customer at a time', and look at the current trends in business, and realize that the prevalent quantity based model, of offering a million things to everyone, might be like hooking a balloon up to an air compressor.  (It might blow up nice and big quick...  but it's gonna pop sooner or later, and then you're left with debries)

So that's about the time I decided that if I open, I just want to stick with my specialty... maybe sprinkle in other things as 'pleasant surprises' for students to keep things fresh, but keep the focus on Taekwondo, and use the extra time I have, to actually spend it with the individual students, honing techniques and helping them make those techniques theirs, rather than spilling a ton of everything on them so they know a bunch of stuff but master none of it.

We'll see how that vision really pans out...  but I like how my gut feels about it.

Excellent post about "RETENTION."  You sure we didn't go to the same  studio in Gentry, Arkansas!  When I moved to Fayetteville, AR, they had self-defense as a seperate course.  I learned it just like you did, as part of regular class.

Anyway,  we just hooked up with two schools in KY.... Crittenden, KY.   Warman's TK-D just South of Cincinatti, OH 'bout 30 miles.
Check out NPTATKD.com if you want.

Ahh.  Cool!  I wasn't aware that Mr. Warman had elected to go that route.  I've known his TKD instructor since she was 60 years old and a 1st degree, back around 1981.  She and I had the same instructor.  When I bowed out in about 1985, to take to other pursuits like the Fire Department and girls (I was in high school by then), She carried on over the years, and became a 6th degree and turned out a number of pretty talented martial artists, two of which became my instructors when I got back into the act 'actively' in 2005.

I'm out of Newport Kentucky and stay relatively local.  (Gas prices force that)  I continue to practice all 21 of my forms, (Chang Hon and Songahm TKD), and study boxing at a local gym, run by the guy who taught Jerry "Golden Boy" Trimble how to box.  This year is booked up between work and other pressing concerns, but I figure 2009, I'll be planning on making the Bluegrass Nationals to satisfy my curiosity about competition at open tournaments.

Looks like NPTA is making some strides!  That's good... I think more quality organizations will enhance the competition in the industry and inspire all the organizations to keep improving.

Keep up the rehab on the knee Sarge.   A year from now you won't even remember it.
Thanks for the kind words.  I don't want to be one of those guys that can predict the weather because of my knee!
